Concord star has strong relationship with USC coaches
Rick Sandidge has two schools that will stay near the top of his list
CONCORD, N.C. - Concord High defensive tackle Rick Sandidge is not ready to release his top seven schools, but when he does he knows two schools that will make the cut and other cuts in the future until he makes his commitment.
“UNC and South Carolina. Those are the ones that are always going to be in there regardless,” Sandidge said. “They recruited me early and kept on recruiting me.”
Sandidge is one of the top remaining targets on South Carolina’s board. He is rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 134 overall player in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
At 6-foot-5 and 288 pounds, Sandidge has the size to contribute right away at USC. He visited Columbia within the past month and enjoyed the trip.
“They’re recruiting me hard and saying that they need me. They’ve told me that I would be a major key,” Sandidge said. “They said if I was to commit they would get other players to commit just because I’m going there.”
Sandidge hears often from Will Muschamp, Bobby Bentley and Lance Thompson and has a good relationship with all three of the USC coaches.
In particular he was impressed by how much Muschamp was around on his most recent visit to campus.
“Coach Muschamp, I saw him more than 10 times while I was there,” he said. “Coach Bentley is my recruiter in my area, Coach Muschamp because he stays in contact, Coach Thompson because he’s my position coach and he’s been talking to me, too.”
Some believe South Carolina is the favorite to land Sandidge right now. Sandidge did not confirm that but did say he likes USC.
“They’re not doing nothing wrong. They’re just recruiting me hard. It’s something I like, to be honest,” he said. “But it wouldn’t change my thoughts on another school though because I will still give them the opportunity.”
Sandidge is planning to take official visits to Louisville and Penn State during the season. He does not plan to use an official visit for North Carolina because it is close to home. He is unsure if South Carolina will get an official visit because it is also close to home.
Sandidge admitted that he is growing tired of the recruiting process but said he is not close to making a decision yet.
“Whenever I go on a college visit, all of the schools are going to have good academics, all of the schools are going to have a great tradition at the school, all of the schools are going to say like, ‘Hey, we need you,’ ” he said. “I’m hearing the same message about academics, about being number one in something. I’m just trying to get a feel with the coaches and the players and the trainers because that’s the people I’m going to be spending my three to four years there with.
