WBB: Gamecocks hang a hundred on ETSU

Wasn't able to watch the game, but not surprised. The players in the #1 recruiting class in the land are now Seniors and they have solid teammates.

Cardoso is probably going to be the best Center Dawn has ever had here, too.

Looking forward to the indoor games getting back to normal this year post-Covid.

Was impressed with red-shirt freshman PG Raven Johnson: I know she was highly rated out of high school, but she showed she's ready to be a leader. Coach Staley rotated both Johnson and Grad transfer PG Kierra Fletcher constantly throughout the game, since each were dealing with injuries that they are coming off of. She got them good minutes in the game, without over-taxing them for any stretch of game. Johnson led the team with 4 assists as well as 4 steals, and made several heady passes you don't expect from a freshman.

Also impressed with Johnson's fellow classmate and true sophomore Sania Feagin, as well with true freshmen Talaysia Cooper and Ashlyn Watkins. These are all three very athletic and energy players who come into the game looking for the ball and do not show much intimidation from the college game. Feagin showed this last season, but was so buried under the depth that she rarely got lengthy minutes at any one time to show a lot - basically only showed flashes. But when both Feagin and Watkins are both on the floor at the same time, that's some incredible talent in the post that will dominate most opponents on the schedule for this season.

Watkins also showed me something that the team hasn't seen a lot of since the graduation of Alaina Coates: ATTITUDE. I think Watkins is going to bring that kind of attitude back to the team, that Coach Staley has said she has wanted to see more of.

Bree Hall - the other classmate of Johnson's and Feagins' that's still on the team (after Rivers transferred out to NC State), was kept out of the game with an illness.

NOTE: we still need to see more against more legitimate opposition - that's going to happen pretty quick, with road games at Maryland this Friday, at Clemson a week after Thursday, and at Stanford a week after Sunday - to see how our new PGs will fare. But right now there's serious talk starting up that this iteration of the WBB Gamecocks may just be a tick or two BETTER than last season's team that won it all. Hold onto your hats!
