Weekend recruiting Round-up

Jan. 30, 2017

DE Brad Johnson of Pendleton is getting closer on a decision between USC and Virginia Tech but looks like he will go to Signing Day his coach said Sunday night.  “He just likes both schools so much,” coach Paul Sutherland said. “He loves Coach Muschamp and his staff, and he loves Coach Fuente and his staff.  He talked to both staffs several times over the weekend.”  Sutherland said Johnson will call both head coaches with his decision when it is reached.

OL Jordan Carty of Hollywood, FL made his official visit to USC over the weekend.  “It went good, he loved it,” said South Broward defensive coordinator Junior Rosegreen who was in touch with Carty after the visit.  Rosegreen said Carty will choose between USC and Mississippi State this week.

Per GamecockCentral, USC DE commit Tyreek Johnson will not sign Wednesday, will grayshirt, due to pending shoulder surgery.
USC commitment DB Zay Brown of Athens, who made his official visit over the weekend,  said he’s 100% firm and will sign around 8:15 Wednesday morning.

DE Robert Beal of Suwanee, GA, who is a Georgia commitment, made his official visit to USC over the weekend.  He said he’s still 100% committed to the Bulldogs but he did like what he saw in Columbia.  “It kind of opened my eyes a little bit, got a lot to think about.  I saw some familiar faces and saw how cool Coach Peterson is.”  He said the pitch made by the Gamecock coaches was, “We need you.  We will develop you.”  Asked if anything has really changed with his commitment to Georgia, Beal replied, “Not really.”  Beal said he will be talking with coaches from USC and Georgia over the next couple of days.

DE Aaron Sterling came out of his official visit to USC Sunday still undecided between USC and Tennessee.  He said it’s a 50-50 deal between the two at this point.  “The visit was awesome.  I got to see more in detail everything.  I got to talk to the players and get their opinion on everything.  They keep listing me like Dominique Easley, come in and play that three technique, anything on the D-line.  I like that.  I still got to pray on it.  Still thinking.  Signing Day.  I’m going to sit down with my mom and talk with my dad and get their opinion.  It’s just that feeling, asking God which one is the best.”   Sterling said Tennessee also gave him a good visit and he couldn’t say one visit was better than the other.  There is a 10:00 AM signing ceremony set for his school Wednesday.

DE Devontae Davis (6-4 245) of Silver Bluff made his official visit to USC over the weekend.  The Gamecocks are looking at him as a potential sign and place prospect unless his grades improve enough the rest of the school year to qualify.  “It was a nice experience.  They showed me the academic center and the whole campus.  They are waiting to see where my grades fall at the end of this year and go from there. If I don’t qualify, they would like for me to go to junior college just as long as I come back here.”  Davis said he’s also looking at Coastal Carolina.  As for junior colleges, he’s looking at Georgia Military, Jones and Garden City.  He’s not sure if he will sign on Wednesday.  Davis said USC started recruiting him at the beginning of his senior season and he likes defensive line coach Lance Thompson.
