Admittedly, I remember watching him on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and didn't get him then, nor now. But there is no denying the balls of steel he had to perform his experimental style of music on the national stage. I do remember feeling uncomfortable about his nonchalance acceptance of being the butt of jokes by most of the hosts of the shows in which he appeared. And to this day, I don't have a clue as to whether the whole androgynous characterization was part of his act personae or his reality. I'm not a social historian, but I got to think that in many ways he was a ground breaker.
