Which key recruiting targets are still left for South Carolina?

December 13, 2017

Heading into the last week before the early signing day, South Carolina has what should be four more open spots in the 2018 recruiting class after Israel Mukuamu committed this weekend.

The Gamecocks football staff is still after a range of top targets, most notably the ones below (Ranked by spot in 247Composite):

Buck defensive end K.J. Henry (No. 7 overall): The quick, skinny (6-foot-5, 235 pounds) defensive lineman has the potential to be a pass-rush terror. There’s some thought he’s a Clemson lean, but he’s said publicly a school that hires his father could be a factor.

Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. (No. 56): A bit of a longshot, as a lot of programs are trying to flip the Florida State commit and son of a former NFL star. He was in Columbia in October and was visited by Ohio State this week.

Linebacker Channing Tindall (No. 91): A local product and Mr. Football finalist, Tindall has looked at South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Auburn, but the first two schools are believed to be in the lead.

Offensive tackle Dylan Wonnum (No. 127): The brother of current South Carolina defensive star D.J. Wonnum, Dylan Wonnum is a four-star lineman ranked in the top 10 at his position. He’s visited USC at least three times this season.

Defensive tackle Rick Sandidge (No. 130): A big body at 6-foot-5, 288 pounds, the Concord, N.C., lineman has family ties to South Carolina. He’s taken at least four unofficial visits and is at the Shrine Bowl this week.

Cornerback Jaycee Horn (No. 203): The son of former NFL star Joe Horn decommitted from Tennessee recently and nearly gave his pledge to the Gamecocks during the summer. He has a strong relationship with Travaris Robinson and Will Muschamp.

Wide receiver Rashod Bateman (No. 353): South Carolina came in with a late offer to the Minnesota commit. He’s a four-star, but it’s unclear how he fits with a group that already has three commits.

Offensive lineman Jovaughn Gwyn (No. 415): At 6-foot-3, 290 pounds, the Charlotte guard is reportedly down to South Carolina and N.C. State.

Linebacker Rosendo Louis (No. 423): The FSU commit is getting a heavy press from USC, which sent coaches for an in-home last week and had him in on official visit this week. The 6-foot-1, 225-pounder committed to the Seminoles’ previous staff.

Athlete Bryce Thompson (No. 528): Another local talent, Thompson has been a dynamic star at two Columbia-area schools. If he gets his grades in order, he’s likely landing with USC, and he reportedly would likely end up at defensive back at 6-foot, 180 pounds (though he was a dynamic offensive player in high school).

Defensive end Jarrett Jackson (No. 941): The Gamecocks staff has made up a lot of ground as it tries to flip the 6-foot-5, 245-pound Louisville commit. USC is listed as his only visit besides Louisville.

Defensive end Dorian Gerald (JuCo No. 19): Still a soft Tennessee commit, the 6-foot-3, 260-pound lineman hails from Florence. He plans to take an official visit to USC after an abbreviated one for the Clemson game.
