Who’s next? 12 to watch on Gamecocks’ recruiting board
July 24, 2017
South Carolina has 15 commitments for the 2018 class after four pledges over the weekend.
The latest prospects to say yes to the Gamecocks did so as part of Friday’s Will Muschamp Football Camp or Saturday’s Spurs Up Cookout, both the last hurrahs of the summer recruiting season.
With National Signing Day (Feb. 7) more than six months away, here are 12 of the names at the top of USC’s recruiting board.
(Ranked in order of where South Carolina stands in the prospects’ 247Sports Crystal Ball projections.)
Steven Gilmore
Cornerback; 5-9, 152; Rock Hill/South Pointe
▪ The latest: The brother of Gamecock great Stephon Gilmore has a final four of USC, UNC, Georgia and Louisville and plans a decision on his birthday, Sept. 17.
▪ 247Sports Crystal Ball says: 100 percent South Carolina
Bryce Thompson
6-0, 180; defensive back; Irmo/Dutch Fork
▪ The latest: The one-time Virginia Tech commit now claims a top three of the Hokies, NC State and South Carolina. A decision is tentative for July 30 but could come later.
▪ 247Sports Crystal Ball says: 100 percent South Carolina
Rick Sandidge
Defensive tackle; 6-5, 288; Concord, N.C.
▪ The latest: After trips to Ohio State and Georgia, among others, Sandidge took a final summer visit to Columbia this weekend, declaring on Twitter that USC “almost feels like a 2nd home.” He would be a crown jewel of the class if USC can land him.
▪ 247Sports Crystal Ball says: 100 percent South Carolina
Josh Vann
Wide receiver; 5-11, 175; Tucker, Ga.
▪ The latest: Visited the Gamecocks this weekend and told 247Sports it’s 50-50 between USC and the home-state Georgia Bulldogs. A decision could come before his season begins. USC landed two receiver pledges over the weekend and already have three in the class.
▪ 247Sports Crystal Ball says: 100 percent South Carolina
Dylan Wonnum
Offensive tackle; 6-5, 279; Tucker, Ga.
▪ The latest: Visited for the Spurs Up Cookout. The brother of Gamecock D-lineman D.J. Wonnum claims no favorite and says a decision will come in December. USC has five line commits already but would certainly take a pledge from Wonnum, the nation’s ninth-best tackle prospect.
▪ 247Sports Crystal Ball says: 100 percent South Carolina
Jaycee Horn
Cornerback; 6-0, 174; Alpharetta, Ga.
▪ The latest: It was Alabama or South Carolina for the talented DB and son of former NFL standout Joe Horn. He postponed a July 15 decision with increased interest coming in from Tennessee. He visited the Vols and Crimson Tide over the weekend and told Rivals a decision is now more likely early in his senior season.
▪ 247Sports Crystal Ball says: 90 percent South Carolina, 10 percent Alabama
