Who’s next to commit to the 2017 signing class?
Nov. 30, 2016
Space is tight in South Carolina’s 2017 signing class, and it is almost December.
We’re getting down to the nitty-gritty of the Gamecocks’ final recruiting push before the first Wednesday in February. However, a few prospects will sign before Christmas.
Among the prospects worth tracking before the holiday are a pair of JUCO defensive backs, both of whom could end up enrolling at South Carolina in January.
Kaleb Chalmers, Northwest Mississippi Community College (Greenwood, S.C.)
Chalmers, who graduated from Greenwood High School in December of 2014, enrolled at Clemson that January. After taking a redshirt in 2015, he was arrested earlier this year on simple possession drug charges and dismissed from Clemson.
South Carolina officially had him on campus for the weekend of the Western Carolina game.
The former 3-star (Rivals) cornerback wound up at Northwest Mississippi Community College, where he’s had 26 tackles, 12 pass breakups and 1 interception. The Rangers play again on Saturday against Trinity Valley (Texas) in the Heart of Texas Bowl.
The following weekend, Chalmers will take an official visit to Ole Miss. A decision is expected to be announced sometime shortly thereafter.
The 6-foot, 180-pound prospect will be a redshirt sophomore when he joins his new home in the SEC.
Keisean Nixon, Arizona Western College (Compton, Calif.)
After entertaining offers from Colorado State and Iowa State, Nixon has moved on to other schools including South Carolina and Oregon State. All four have hosted him for official visits.
Also, before Thanksgiving, Nixon scored an offer while on an unofficial visit to UCLA, his hometown school. Several schools are jockeying for the final official, including Georgia, Mississippi State and Tennessee.
Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen flew to Yuma, Ariz., on Monday to meet with Nixon. Later that evening, Nixon saw South Carolina coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson. Georgia and Tennessee offered on Tuesday.
South Carolina is thought to be ahead of the pack. He would play a number of positions for the Gamecocks: cornerback, nickelback, safety and kick returner.
This season for Arizona Western, Nixon totaled 22 tackles and 6 interceptions. He also returned 7 kickoffs for 382 yards and 3 punts for 30 yards.
