South Carolina to host recruiting weekend

Jan. 13, 2017

Friday kick starts January’s first major recruiting weekend for college football coaches across the country, including Will Muschamp at South Carolina.

The Gamecocks staff will welcome several non-committed 2017 prospects for the three weekends before Feb. 1’s National Signing Day. Most of them play on the offensive or defensive lines.

Below are the recruits expected to visit the Columbia campus this weekend. The list, of course, is subject to change.

OT Tony Gray, 4-star

South Carolina will have the first opportunity to entertain Gray, who played his senior season at Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga. According to recruiting watchers, Florida is the team to beat for Gray, the No. 27-ranked offensive tackle in the country. Auburn, Florida State and Ole Miss were listed among Gray’s favorites.

DE Brad Johnson, 4-star

Johnson was been pegged as a South Carolina lean for much of the past year. Now, Virginia Tech has emerged as a threat. However, the Pendleton (S.C.) High School prospect has been to Columbia several times, plenty more than he’s made the trek to Blacksburg. The Hokies had him on campus in December. Tennessee is scheduled to host him next weekend.

OT Jordan Rhodes, 3-star

Rhodes visited South Carolina in the fall for the Tennessee game, and the visit made a strong impression. But the Gamecocks lost offensive line coach Shawn Elliott, now head coach at Georgia State, so new assistant coach Eric Wolford has some catching up to do in building a relationship. Mississippi State, Missouri, Cincinnati and Georgia State will have Rhodes in for official visits.

DT Jaylen Twyman, 3-star

Pittsburgh had Twyman in for an official visit in December. Twyman is the No. 46-ranked defensive tackle in the country and will head to Missouri next weekend. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound prospect is from Woodson High in Washington, D.C.

DT Devonte Wyatt, 3-star

Once committed to South Carolina, Wyatt is a hard commit to Georgia. This Towers High School (Decatur, Ga.) prospect will also take official visits to Georgia and Florida this month. The Dawgs will have him on campus next weekend.

The following South Carolina commitments have confirmed plans to be in town this weekend as official visitors:

OT Eric Douglas, 3-star; Mallard Creek High, Charlotte, N.C.

LB Sherrod Greene, 3-star; Rocky Mount, N.C.

CB Tavyn Jackson, 3-star; James Rickards High, Tallahasse, Fla.

S Hamsah Nasirildeen, 4-star; Concord, N.C.

TE Will Register, 3-star; Chapin, S.C.

QB Jay Urich, 3-star; Wren High, Piedmont, S.C.
