Will a 6th offensive coordinator make a difference in Will Muschamp's South Carolina future?

Nov. 18, 2019

Barring a complete 180 against Clemson, it appears significant offensive changes are on the way if coach Will Muschamp is, in fact, set to return for a 5th season in 2020.

How much offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon is to blame is up for debate, but the coaching staff has already switched spots this season during games, with McClendon moving from the sidelines to the press box, and QB coach Dan Werner going to the sidelines.

As the Gamecocks have worked through this offensive malaise, that was a move the coaching staff hoped offered a spark. After all, McClendon had started his play-calling career in the box, a setup that lasted 6 games before a rain storm last year against Missouri knocked out South Carolina’s headsets. The moved helped McClendon, who also coaches the receivers, iron out the offense after a series of drops. (VIEW ARTICLE) SDS

If he makes a change it better be a really good one.  He needs a sure thing hire this time no matter the expense.  A proven OC.  Someone that will change the narrative, give hope to fans and recruits, and bring some excitement back to the program.  Hope he can do it.

Whoever gets hired better be a good hire or else that’s probably the end of the road for Muschamp

Won’t matter unless champ gives them total control in play calling and for game planning.   He has to be totally hands off the offense.  He should recruit.   Clap on the sidelines and argue with refs.  Handle the postgame.  Maybe coach special teams.

Looking forward to the day just maybe we will be able to reach these goal of performance. We got a long tough uphill battle. Just have to have the right people in place top to bottom.

The Clemson offensive line is one of the 10 semi-finalists for the Joe Moore award which goes annually to the top offensive line in college football.

my general thought is im not sure any oc can turn this thing around because i dont think we have will have enough all sec caliber talent for it to matter.   then you have a consistent theme under muschamp where we treat the starting qb with kid gloves and whether its under the hc's or the oc's directive we're scared to run the qb as if we're undefeated and hes the only scholarship qb on the roster.

the bmac oc tenure in summary, he gets the job for a 2nd half bowl performance without deebo, the next year offense does well statistically with deebo until he sits out the last 6 quarters and it goes completely in the toilet and continues to circle the drain for the entire 2019 season.   not that our situations were in any way similar but in retrospect that belk bowl was like our west virginia orange bowl game.  you dont have that kind of a disaster in a bowl game and not make changes at coordinator or head coach because obviously something was broken that wasnt fixable under the regime as is or else that kind of shellacking in a bowl game wouldnt have happened in the first place.

right now we're currently 123rd in raw offensive efficiency, louisville last year was 124th and this year they are 48th so a big turnaround is possible.  difference being theyre doing it with a new head coach.  in a similar respect i think whoever the new oc is needs to have total control over the staff on that side of the ball.  if that means the entire current offensive staff is gone then so be it.  would muschamp cede that kind of control?  i doubt it.

I think we all need to calm down and step away from the ledge but not forget that we are on the ledge. Its a long ways down. Take a look at what is right and what is wrong with our program.

     What is right?

               1) Muschamp is a good and proven recruiter.

                2) Muschamp is a fighter

                 3) Muschamp has a very good understanding of defense

                  4) Mushamp has a good looking wife

      What is wrong?

                  1) Every year his teams are plagued by a high number of injuries

                   2) He continues to have problems with his Offenses

                    3) He has trouble making adjustments whether to preserve a lead or come from behind.

           How do we fix it?

                      1) I would like to see Muschamp make it and right the ship.

                       2) We can't keep making the same mistakes year after year

                        3) Address the flaw that keeps his teams injury prone

                        4) Spend the money to hire the best supporting staff

                         5) If these things don't work... replace him in 2 years

              What do you think?

Chad Morris should be our next O Coordinator.  He knows the landscape, has relationships with HS coaches in the SE, and clearly has the O chops to get the job done.  He's a natural fit.  He has also proven that he's not a HC so hopefully we can pick him up and get some longevity in that position because he (now like Champ), know the grass isn't always greener as a HC.

I hope they are having serious conversation s with Chad.

Going to have to get someone like Morris.  A proven OC that will run the O with no problem telling Muschamp to get out of his way.  I don’t think WM is as much a problem in the O as some think but I do think having someone with experience and backbone to do what he believes in without hesitation is important.

Ok, I have a guy that would check all the boxes.  It is a little bit out there, but, what if we talked Steve Spurrier into getting back in the game? He could do what he likes best, drawing up ball plays and running the offense without having to do the things he hates like recruiting and attending all the functions during the talking season. He would definitely bring excitement back to the program. And, it would be an excellent chance to right the wrong he did when he left us during a loosing season.  I know his ego would make it tough to answer to a head coach, but, this would give him a chance to build on his legacy and write a few more pages in college football history.

I very much like the idea but doubt it will ever happen. I believe that offensive play calling is not our biggest problem. I am convinced that if we could some how significantly cut down on injuries we would be profoundly improved. I can look back over the season and recap how every loss was a result of injuries at key positions, except the first game and the Alabama game. I don't know if its a lack of depth or flawed strength and conditioning....but it has been glaringly obvious, not only here but also with his teams in Gainesville.

I agree that injuries have been a major problem since CWM arrived.  Sure, we had them before, but not to the point of having entire defenses or offenses decimated and playing 3rd string true freshmen in many spots.  This is a real concern with the current coaching staff; something that must be addressed now.

However, injuries are not the sole reason, or the most impactful reason, for our anemic offense.  Muschamp has a pattern of recruiting high quality players on offense going back to his FL days with only mediocre performance as the result.  Some of this can be attributed to injuries, but much of it is offensive coaching.  We rushed for a total of 21 yards against App St! Let that sink in.  45 yards against ATM and 78 yards against Tenn.  Sure injuries attributed to these low numbers, but, we should be able to put a decent 3 star back out of high school in a game and get better than that.

It would be nice to get a guy like Chad Morris for OC but it'll take a little luck and money to do that.  But if we're going to take a chance on somebody because it very well could be Muschamps last year next year, why not give this guy a shot?

After seeing what LSU did through the air this year he might just be what the doctor ordered.

Methinks some of the options discussed in this thread are way more than just long shots. It’s more like Hail Marys from our own end zone.

The only logical choice suggested is Morris and there are two reasons to pause.

1.  The dumpster fire at Arkansas under his watch.

and

2. SMU performed much better after he left. (Although that could hint at his recruiting ability)

I agree, also he should stop running practices and fires his S&C coach. Of course this basically just means that we both think he should quit.

I think Champ's ego is the bigger problem with this relationship. Spurrier was already run off from the program under Champ's watch.
