Will easier transfers help even the playing field?

I was just reading where Alabama has had several players enter the transfer portal, and we know we have had several, as well.  

The thought occurred to me, that with transfers being much easier now, and players not wanting to wait their turn to play at some of the bigger programs, do you think that will have an effect on leveling the playing field in college football somewhat?

I think it may somewhat play a part, but overall not much change would come of it. The players that are transferring for the most part are probably looking for playing time. If Alabama's top players are playing and the backups are not seeing the field, it really wouldn't disrupt them.

Good points AC. the new transfers can help teams like Carolina and hurt teams like Bama. Carolina benefited from the Belk. Just a shame he did not hang with us and gave up the sport to be a truck driver.  So like anything has its ups and downs.

I follow you, but that is basically where I was leading.  Teams like Alabama will lose guys who aren't starting, thus giving up some of their depth.  They can get injured, like our defense did last year, and then what happens?  I don't think bama is going to roll over and die because of transfers, but I believe it can help elevate teams like ours, when highly skilled players can get immediate playing time here, and other places. I think overall it will hurt teams like them.

I actually like that players are getting more freedom in changing programs without losing much eligibility.

That being said transfer may hurt Alabama’s depth but may not help lower level programs as much as help the other top ten teams that may be missing that quarterback or wide receiver or lineman.

the loosening of transfer rules will instead help us get more North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida transfers

What I would be mostly concerned about is that top-tier team's transfers are probably their third and fourth team backups. They may be more like our starters or 2nd team. No doubt they would provide great depth but not game changers. Basically, what Cockyandproud said.

I think it could hurt a team like ours where building quality depth is an issue already.  If you do not have a strong football tradition it seems kids would be more likely to jump ship quickly.  I guess at the end of the day it adds another element to your recruiting and how well it may work for your team will be about how your coaches manage the "transfer portal" (I hate that term) as a part of their overall recruiting process.
