Will Muschamp describes the perfect recruit
July 18, 2016
South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp has a clear-cut idea of what he wants to see in a prospective student-athlete.
“Competitive edge, guys that want to compete,” Muschamp said. “The guys that go compete, the self-starters, they come out every day and do their job.”
Muschamp made the remarks Monday as part of SEC coaches’ time through the “car wash” at ESPN’s studios in Bristol, Conn., an all-day affair that includes stops on various TV and a radio shows.
Muschamp appeared with Georgia coach Kirby Smart on ESPN SportsCenter and was asked what makes the perfect recruit. He wants guys who are interested in an opportunity to compete for playing time, he said.
“Those guys that ask me about the depth chart the third time, I’m done. I’m moving on to the next guy,” he said.
Muschamp reiterated that this year’s Gamecocks team will be built more around what the players can do and less about a system or scheme.
“It’s all about what the players can do,” he said. “Don’t ask a guy to play man-to-man if he can’t cover a bucket of water. That’s what good coaches do. We’re going to evolve that in time with recruiting our roster.”
