Will Muschamp offers another quarterback

Oct. 19, 2016

Justin Fields walked away from The Opening in Atlanta feeling good about himself.

His SPARQ score, a rating that measures athleticism, was second highest among all quarterbacks participating in the event.

Fields checked in at 6-foot-2, 202 pounds that afternoon in March. His best 40-yard-dash time was 4.74 seconds. The short-shuttle was timed at 4.38. The power ball throw and vertical jump reached 38 inches and 33.3 inches, respectively.

South Carolina freshman quarterback Jake Bentley, who was still a junior at Opelika High School in Alabama, had the highest SPARQ rating among all quarterbacks (100.32).

On Tuesday, South Carolina coach Will Muschamp offered Fields, the No. 8-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2018.

“I talked to Coach Muschamp (on Tuesday night), and they want me to get up there and check it out,” Fields said.

Fields, a 4-star and the No. 183 overall prospect in the country, attends Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Ga., the same school that produced South Carolina wide receiver Lorenzo Nunez.

“He just liked my film and how the way I played and my ability to use my arm and my legs,” Fields said.

Offensive coordinator Kurt Roper stopped by Harrison High School last Thursday to watch Fields practice.

“We (have) texted back and forth, but that’s about it,” Fields said.

Fields began to emerge on the recruiting landscape in April, after he took an unofficial visit to Clemson to watch spring practice.

Fields’ offer sheet includes four other SEC schools: Tennessee, Missouri, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. Louisville, Nebraska, North Carolina, Penn State, TCU and Virginia Tech are among his other offers.

South Carolina’s 2018 quarterback offer board also includes 4-star Dakereon Joyner (North Charleston, S.C.), 4-star Artur Sitkowski (Matawan, N.J.), 3-star James Foster (Montgomery, Ala.) and Joe Milton (Orlando, Fla.).
