Will Muschamp: South Carolina had ‘pretty uneventful signing day’
Feb. 02, 2017
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina hat had barely settled on Jamyest Williams’ head Wednesday when South Carolina football announced the Grayson (Ga.) standout signed with the Gamecocks.
Williams’ letter of intent came in earlier Wednesday, so the tweet was ready to go, sent out one minute after Williams publicly announced his decision to stick with South Carolina. The official class release with names and bios also was ready, passed out moments later after Williams reached to his right for the South Carolina hat.
That was the story of the day for South Carolina coach Will Muschamp, as everything went as planned and as expected.
“This was a pretty uneventful signing day, which for us, we needed that,” Muschamp said. “We felt very comfortable going in to signing day.”
On paper, it was a wild signing day for the Gamecocks. They picked up five key commitments from Williams, offensive lineman Jordon Carty and defensive linemen Brad Johnson, Javon Kinlaw and Aaron Sterling. All five entered the day as undecided recruits, making an announcement between South Carolina and other options around the country.
Inside the program, the day was different. Muschamp and his staff came into the office Wednesday with a strong idea of how the day would unfold. They only had to wait for the letters of intent to confirm everything would go as expected.
“I know that everybody likes to show the war room, everybody jumping up and hugging each other, but for the most part you usually know,” Muschamp said. “Very seldom have we gone into a signing day not knowing what a young man was going to do.”
The Gamecocks wrapped up the class with 24 signees, the final five coming on the final day to give South Carolina a big splash to wrap up the No. 17 class in the nation, according to 247sports.
But there was no celebration planned by Muschamp. Signing day was business as usual and it’s back to business Thursday.
“You just go to the next day,” Muschamp said. “We will be in our office tomorrow morning working on our 18, 19 classes and we start our cut-ups next week for our season.”
