Word on another 2017 quarterback; movement with the 2018 targets

March 01, 2017

More from Ben Lippen

As we close the book on the trip over to Ben Lippen School on Tuesday, there’s one more note to pass along about a South Carolina prospect on that campus.

The Gamecocks offered 2017 quarterback Patrick McClure as a preferred walk-on.

Jacksonville and Campbell have scholarships on the table, but he’s also received preferred walk-on offers from Virginia Tech and Georgia. Clemson — the university, to be specific — holds the cards.

Ben Lippen coach Derek White believes McClure will enroll at one of the two in-state schools.

There also are a few more notes worth passing along on 3-star Virginia Tech commitment Bryce Thompson.

In a previous interview, the No. 9-ranked prospect from South Carolina told SEC Country that he’s weighing the pros and cons of leaving home. Thompson, who played quarterback for Dutch Fork High School in Irmo as a freshman, is still figuring out how far from home he wants to go.

“Coach Muschamp said there’s still a lot I haven’t seen at the USC campus and I will consider that, too. But, also, Columbia, it is awfully close,” Thompson said. “My mom wants me to go explore the world and different places, too. … Hopefully, in the future, I’ll figure out where I want to go.”

Later this spring, he’ll return to Virginia Tech. Trips to Georgia, Michigan, Florida State and Florida have also been tentatively planned.

Thompson and his teammates will get a chance to see how they stack up against out-of-state competition in Week 0 when Jacksonville (Fla.) University School travels to play at Ben Lippen.

Movement with the QB targets

Over the last week, there’s been some significant developments with several of the 2018 quarterback prospects being pursued by South Carolina.

On Monday, Virginia Tech added a commitment from its second 2018 quarterback when 3-star recruit Quincy Patterson joined DeJuan Ellis with the Hokies.

Neither Patterson nor Ellis are South Carolina targets, but Dakereon Joyner certainly is, though it could be was.

The 4-star prospect from Fort Dorchester High School (North Charleston, S.C.) previously listed Virginia Tech as one of his leaders. At this point, it’s probably safe to say the Hokies aren’t going to take three quarterbacks in 2018.

Prior to Patterson’s commitment, Virginia Tech was believed to be South Carolina’s primary challenger. Presumably, Georgia, Louisville, N.C. State and Oregon now are in contention for that distinction.

South Carolina hosted him for another visit on Sunday, while he was in Columbia for an awards ceremony. The Gamecocks have had him more than the other schools by a wide-margin. In fact, he’s been to South Carolina more than those other schools combined.

It was about a week ago when SEC Country took a look at the 2018 quarterback targets. Included in the piece was the suggestion that South Carolina could potentially sign two. That, of course, is based solely on how the numbers might work out down the road.

Whether any of that happens remains to be seen.

At the very least, from this perspective, South Carolina’s next scholarship quarterback commitment will be from Joyner. Again, whether that happens remains to be seen, but it’s hard to imagine that he’ll announce for another school on Father’s Day.

The other quarterback options include 3-star talent James Foster (Montgomery, Ala.), who released a top 8 on Sunday. South Carolina made the cut.

The Gamecocks also were in the top 12 that Dorian Thompson-Robinson announced on Monday night. The 4-star prospect from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas recently told SEC Country that he’s from Columbia, but this is likely to end up as a showdown between Ohio State and Michigan.

Three-star prospect Joe Milton (Orlando, Fla.) told SEC Country’s Ben Wolk that South Carolina coach Will Muschamp was recruiting him as an athlete.

South Carolina targets at Clemson

Five-star defensive end Xavier Thomas, who’s heading to South Carolina on Thursday with several of his teammates from IMG Academy, will be joined on campus by his mom and aunt.

The IMG crew will also visit Clemson before heading back to Bradenton, Fla. Thomas won’t be the only notable 2018 South Carolina target to visit Clemson on Saturday.

Four-star running back Master Teague III (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), 3-star wide receiver Dennis Smith (Gaffney, S.C.), offensive lineman Jovaughn Gwyn (Charlotte, N.C.) and kicker B.T. Potter (Rock Hill, S.C.) will be there, too.
