You already figured it out, but you get the hints as you go along - collecting letters that are NOT part of the word (the white/black letters), as well as letter that either ARE part of the word but are in the wrong place, or are in the correct place (the yellow and green letters). And hopefully by the 6th try, you can take those you've already collected, add them together, rule out all the black/white letters, and figure out what the correct word is.....
 
Interesting that NYT is removing words from the original list which might be offensive:

The discrepancy seems to be only temporary, however. "We are updating the word list over time to remove obscure words to keep the puzzle accessible to more people, as well as insensitive or offensive words," said New York Times communications executive director Jordan Cohen in an email.
