Diondre Champaigne
New USC coach Will Muschamp had the luxury of sitting in his own office at Williams-Brice Stadium and watching the state championship games played in Columbia December December 12th. And it didn’t take him long to spot a player he liked.
The game’s first day featured Fort Dorchester against Dorman in the Big 16 title game and one of the Patriots’ top performers was receiver Diondre Champaigne (6-3 175). He was impressive enough that Muschamp took notice and a week later called him with an offer.
“I was excited about it,” Champaigne said. “He told me he liked how I played at the state game. He said he needs someone to stretch the field more and I could be someone like that.”
Champaigne actually had a inkling an offer was coming a few days earlier.
“Coach Elliott called three days in advance and said there was a good chance they would offer off the state championship game,” he said. “I think it’s a good opportunity for me to get more exposure, and it’s a dream come true to have a chance to play in the SEC. I’m feeling pretty strong about it (the offer) and there’s a pretty good chance I’ll end up at South Carolina.”
Champaigne was at USC for the Clemson game but said he’s never been a big follower of college football so he’s not all that familiar with the Gamecocks. He also has offers from Massachusetts and Western Carolina and has drawn interest from East Carolina and North Greenville.
This season Champaigne had 54 catches for 1212 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Muschamp also is recruiting Champaigne’s teammate OL John Simpson and he’s offered the Patriots’ 2018 quarterback Dakereon Joyner. He also was offered by the previous Gamecock staff.
