One of the state’s leading prospects in the 2017 class is Union County WR Shi Smith 5'11" 175lbs and Wednesday he was in Columbia to meet with Will Muschamp and attend the basketball game. His former coach, former Gamecock quarterback Steve Taneyhill, met him in Columbia while he was on the visit.
“I talked to Coach Muschamp and he said he wants me to say in state and the players they’ve gotten in state have made Carolina better,” Smith said. “I’ve been to Carolina a lot of times and I’ve seen about everything there is to be shown. We were in Coach Muschamp’s office and he showed me how they would use me, a sweep guy inside and outside. He said they would get me matched up with the worst DB on the field.”
Smith has offers from USC, Clemson, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, North Carolina, NC State, Appalachian State and Towson and he said he expects his decision to boil down to the Gamecocks and Tigers.
“Clemson has really been on me since I was in the seventh grade,” Smith said. “I go up there a lot. Roscoe (Crosby) takes me. I pretty much know everything around there.”
Smith said he grew up a Gamecock fan but there is no favorite right now between USC and Clemson. He’d like to make his decision around the middle of his senior season.
Last season Smith caught 50 passes for 1300 yards and 17 touchdowns.
