Wren QB Jay Urich 6'4" 198lbs Friday became the latest in state member of the 2017 class to commit to USC. Urich picked the Gamecocks over Duke and becomes their 10th commitment in the class and their seventh from the state.
Urich is a double threat quarterback who passed for 2760 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushed for 1031 yards and 19 touchdowns last season.
“He’s a big, athletic kid that can run,” said Wren coach Jeff Tate. “In the game of football in college you’ve got to have a guy that can keep a play in play and he’s capable of doing that. He’s just one of those guys who can throw it and run it. He looks to throw it before he runs but when he takes off, he doesn’t pop it for just a few yards. He has the ability to take it the distance.”
Urich plans on graduating early and his coach says he has the character, leadership skills and academic background to excel at the highest level.
“Coach Muschamp asked me, ‘Do you think he’s tough enough, you think he’s solid enough to play in the SEC?’ I said, yes I do. He’s got the frame to carry 225 pounds, an ideal weight for him. Coach (Kurt) Roper told me, he’s a guy that can run and throw and that’s what they are trying to recruit.”
Tate believes Urich will blend in very well with the Gamecocks other young quarterbacks, in particular Jake Bentley.
“I know the kind of kid Jake is,” Tate said. “He’s a great kid and a great quarterback. You can never have too many athletes on our football and you can never have enough competition at quarterback. He’s not afraid to compete. He’s a team guy. He’ll do what these coaches ask him to do and even more.”
USC became Urich’s first major offer in late April and immediately moved into the command recruiting position for him. He made several trips to the campus in the spring and further developed his relationship with Muschamp and Roper. Duke was his only other offer from a Power 5 Conference.
