Xavier Thomas says race is about even between South Carolina, Clemson

Feb. 19, 2017

Five-star defensive end Xavier Thomas is 99 percent certain he will come back to the state of South Carolina to play college football.

Clinging to that other 1 percent, Thomas told Jeff Sentell of DawgNation, is national powerhouse Alabama.

Thomas, who’s currently enrolled at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., updated the status of his recruitment on Sunday at The Opening in Orlando. And, right now, the race between his home state schools, South Carolina and Clemson, is about 50/50.

“I haven’t been to South Carolina for a while, but everyone expects me to go to Clemson, because they have the new facilities and they just won a championship. I already knew about the facility. I already expected them to win the championship,” Thomas said. “I’m just looking forward to seeing South Carolina and how they do with this upcoming season.”

Earlier this year, Thomas transferred from Wilson High School in Florence, S.C. A decision on his next move will be announced just before his senior year or at some point during the season.

“USC has been my dream school, so them telling me I can come there and be the face of the program is big,” Thomas said.

Clemson offers a similar message.

“I can come there and make an immediate impact as a freshman on a defending national championship team,” Thomas said. “That’s pretty big.”

South Carolina defensive line coach Lance Thompson continues to serve as the Gamecocks’ primary recruiter for Thomas. Clemson’s new defensive line coach, Todd Bates, is “developing” his relationship, after coming on board with the Tigers late last month.

Thomas (6-3, 263) also hears from 4-star cornerback Jamyest Williams, who recently signed with South Carolina.

“Jamyest is just telling me to come join and rebuild,” Thomas said. “He could have gone anywhere he wanted in the country, Georgia, Bama, anywhere. But he chose South Carolina to rebuild the class.”

LOL, what he thinks/feels 11.5 months before National Signing Day 2018 is not really as relevant as it would appear.
