I think the island is just a colony of monkeys that were for research but somehow are just there now. The other place up the road in Yemassee is the only active on I know of. It has a recent history of a few “escapees” but nothing like this.

It wasn’t from the island. There’s a research facility in Yemassee and it has happened before although not as many. This seems almost deliberate for that many to get out.
