TOP STORYLINES TO FOLLOW

Shane Beamer,
Year 2: Off the heels of a winning season, Beamer enters his second year as a head coach with even more talent than a year ago. How USC performs against a solid Georgia State squad could serve as a litmus test for where the Gamecocks stand at this point in the Beamer era.

Welcome back, Shawn Elliott: The former USC assistant will coach against his former team for the first time. Elliott also served as USC’s interim head coach after Steve Spurrier’s resignation in 2015. He and Beamer coached together for one year at South Carolina before Beamer left for Virginia Tech.

Spencer Rattler debut: Rattler makes his long-awaited debut as a Gamecock. He’ll step on the field Saturday with 49 total touchdowns in 23 games at Oklahoma under his belt. After USC ran through quarterbacks last year, Rattler is expected to be the QB1 throughout this season if healthy.

New lights at night: The 7:30 p.m. kickoff gives Williams-Brice Stadium the opportunity to display its new LED lights for the first time. Videos have already circulated the internet with the lights flashing garnet and white, but Saturday will be the first time fans get to see things up close.

Jadeveon Clowney jersey retirement: At halftime, iconic South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney will have his No. 7 honored by the team. He is the first player since 1987 to have his jersey retired by the team.

Jordan Strachan is ready: Strachan nicknamed “Stretch” while playing at Georgia State will face his former team on Saturday. Strachan transferred from GSU after the 2020 season and still has close friends on the Panthers. He got the Stretch nickname because his strength coach in Atlanta did not initially know how to pronounce his name.

Jamyest Williams returns: Once a USC defensive back, Jamyest Williams will compete against his former team as a ball carrier. Williams transferred from South Carolina to Georgia State in 2019, making the switch to running back in the process. He was in the same recruiting class as Eric Douglas, Sherrod Greene, Tyreek Johnson, and a few other active Gamecocks.

PLAYERS TO WATCH GAMECOCKS

Jaheim Bell, TE,
South Carolina: Bell’s versatility was on full display in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, as he lined up all over the field. The way South Carolina uses him could create matchup problems across the field.

Cam Smith, DB, South Carolina: Smith plays in the nickel often for the Gamecocks, and he’s recognized as one of the best cornerbacks in the nation entering this year. In 2021, he recorded three interceptions.

PLAYERS TO WATCH PANTHERS

Blake Carroll, LB,
Georgia State: Carroll led the Panthers in sacks last season with 5.5 and came second in tackles with 89. His activity on the field could disrupt South Carolina’s offensive flow due to his playmaking abilities.

Tucker Gregg, RB, Georgia State: Gregg was Georgia State’s leading rusher with 953 yards, adding nine touchdowns to his stat line. He was an efficient runner as well, averaging five yards per carrying. Gregg’s productivity presents a challenge to a Gamecock team that gave up 178.9 yards per game on the ground in 2021.

Gamecocks announce opening-night sellout for Georgia State game

South Carolina football will be playing to a full house for its season opener on Saturday against Georgia State. The school announced on Friday that the game is sold out. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium. South Carolina is coming off a 7-6 season in Shane Beamer’s first season as coach. The Gamecocks defeated North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and have built a lot of momentum in the offseason with the addition of several key transfers and recruits including Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler and tight end Austin Stogner.

Upgrades have been made to the stadium over the summer to enhance the fan experience including a new sound system, LED lights, expanded patio space, and more.

It is Saturday in South Carolina and it is time for Gamecock football!! I am 70 but this time of the year gives me that extra kick!!

Well, I don't have ESPN + or SEC + so I'll be listening old school on the radio. I'm in Charlotte so I hope the Rock Hill station comes through clearly.

Final thoughts, prediction for South Carolina vs Georgia St.

Nine months after South Carolina throttled North Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, we’ll get our first true look at the 2022 Gamecocks when USC welcomes Georgia State to town on Saturday night. The offseason optimism surrounding coach Shane Beamer’s squad is otherworldly. It only takes a quick scan of message boards or Facebook groups dedicated to the Gamecocks to find fans calling for a 9-3 season or better.

Wishful thinking, I suppose. I’m not quite that bullish my preseason prediction is 7-5 With an outside chance of 8-4 but any hopes of a breakout season in Columbia begin with a tricky Georgia State squad helmed by ex-Steve Spurrier assistant Shawn Elliott. “Any game we go into I want to win and I want to win it bad,” Elliott told The State recently. “That doesn’t change. But the fact that those years of my life in South Carolina were so special, it’s gonna be nice to be back.”

South Carolina is projected as a roughly 12- to-14-point favorite depending on your sportsbook of choice. That said, I like this game to be close well into the second half. The Panthers are a veteran group fresh off a program-best eight wins last year, capping the year with a victory over Ball State in the Camellia Bowl. Elliott has led Georgia State to bowl games in four of his five years as a head coach. Expect another postseason berth this season. One-time South Carolina defensive back Jamyest Williams makes up half of one of the Group of Five’s most dynamic tailback tandems alongside Tucker Gregg. That pair has combined for 10 years (!!) of college football and 69 games in their lengthy careers.

“This is a really, really good football team that we’re about to play on Saturday night,” Beamer said. “No disrespect to Eastern Illinois, who we opened up with last year, but this ain’t Eastern Illinois.”

But enough about Georgia State. You’re worried about the Gamecocks. Speaking of, have you heard about this new quarterback? The kid with a snake-like last name? Perhaps you have. Saturday marks Spencer Rattler’s debut in garnet and black after a topsy-turvy career at Oklahoma that ranged from Heisman front-runner to clipboard holder.

Finally, though, we’ll get to see Rattler rip it in something with higher stakes than a spring game or scattered throws in a fall practice viewing period. “I think the biggest thing with (Rattler) or any of our guys, it’s just going out there and it’s cliche do your job,” Beamer said. “Be yourself. You don’t need to be Superman out there. Make plays and execute.

Between Elliott’s and Williams’ returns to Columbia, Rattler’s debut, and Beamer’s offseason of good vibes, there are enough narratives Saturday to fill a Dan Brown novel, or three. South Carolina is still flying a smidge under the radar compared to the Tennessees and Kentuckys of the world, giving this game a little less national attention than it probably deserves. I feel pretty confident saying this ends up a sneaky close game. Seriously, don’t be surprised if Georgia State hangs around into the second half if South Carolina comes out flat (think the 2021 East Carolina game). Give me the Gamecocks, but it may cause more sweating than a mid-August run along the Congaree River.

Score prediction: South Carolina 35, Georgia State 24

Justin King has always been pretty good, but he's kicked it up a healthy notch in the last year as far as the editing goes.

No one is better at drone footage than us, either. It takes a lot of piloting skill to get the smooth footage they get, even if there's a gyro camera on the drone itself.
