Shane Beamer Era Begins: 2021 Football Fall Camp Thread

The more I read about this staff and CSB, the more excited I get as well.  My expectations are pretty low for this season (4-5 wins), but that is not how I feel about this staff.  I am really excited to see how they coach in a game.

I'm in the same boat - just feel like the long rebuild ahead of us is in good hands.

People were excited about Muschamp coming here because no one else, other than Tom Herman, was considered both available and qualified for the job.  However, everyone knew that Muschamp was unable to put it together at UF despite the considerably better talent down there than up here.

Shane is an unproven HC, but he doesn't have the negative history that Muschamp had before coming here, either.

Muschamp also didn't bring his former X-factor recruits to talk to the team like Shane has so far.  Having his former UF players wish him well after our game with them just isn't the same thing.

The season may be bumpy at first, but we will be okay.

Shane following the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid).  Short and sweet.

For the first time in years I'm impressed with the direction the team seems to be headed. The staff appears very motivated and involved, and the players appear to have bought into what is being done. We'll know how successful the efforts are after a few games. but I am optimistic the season will be better than most expect.

The rites of summer if you re a Carolina fan always include two things: discussions about whether or not we will have a new helmet design, and a discussion about how the team seems closer and "more like a family." It gets said every year - and some years, it's true and you can see it in a team that fights until the end and is always trying to lift each other up. Sometimes it's just talk and that shows, too. I think the difference this year is Shane and his staff seem to be building something that is genuinely about that culture as the core of the program - so unlike some years, I am optimistic when I hear that this year, not skeptical.

So true - throw in some comments about 'pink tutus', 'no respect' when we are picked near last in the SEC east, etc.

I’m not arguing, because my memory isn’t what it used to be, but I don’t remember us talking about the team being closely knit over the last two seasons. We could have, but I don’t remember anything but discord, selfishness, lack of effort, looking at the tape, and confusion for the last two years.

You could be right. Here's how I remember it: Last year was a mess, no doubt. Two years ago the hopes were high for Jake's last season, we had gone 7-6 the year before, Jake had the game of his life against the Taters, the downward death spiral of the Muschamp regime was not yet apparent, and I vividly remember the hype and hope and "family" stuff leading up to the UNC game. And of course it was like a balloon popped after that game, and that was that.

Last year has pretty much obliterated any good memories about Gamecock football to about 2011, for me.

Last night on Carolina Calls, Todd said the whole team looks noticeably stronger physically than the one last year because of Luke Day.

That will bode well for us this season.

After two days off from the 2nd scrimmage of the fall camp Saturday, Practice #15 was held this morning. Coach Beamer met with the media in the post-practice presser today. Here are some key points to take away from the presser:

  • Beamer is an advocate for teams being able to scrimmage other teams pre-season. In lieu of that not being an option, the Gamecocks will have a mock game week this week, a week prior to the official game week next week, to get the team and staff prepared.
  • Beamer stated that the 2nd scrimmage Saturday was one of the "sharpest" 2nd scrimmages of a preseason camp he's been involved with, and he was very happy with our scrimmage.
  • Beamer stated all three QBs in Norland, Brown, and Gauthier are pushing each other and performing well. Stated Brown had his best week of practice last week.
  • A name not mentioned often from the RB room for the Gamecocks, with Harris, Lloyd, White, and Amos, is freshman Caleb "Juju" McDowell out of Lee County. McDowell has been getting rave reviews from players and coaches alike this fall camp, despite being the smallest RB on the depth chart. When asked how much he will use McDowell this year, Coach Beamer responded "a lot!".
  • QB Luke Doty had the cast removed Sunday and is now in a walking boot. The starting QB won't be named until more is known about Doty's status. Beamers says more should be known towards the end of this week.
  • RB Kevin Harris is getting closer to being available for Week 1 against Eastern Illinois. He's been in full pads running and drilling but kept out of full contact. Harris met with team doctors last week and everything was fine. The staff knew that when Harris had the surgical procedure done that it would be right at the start of the season for him to be determined ready to go, so this hasn't been unexpected. Harris should be full go for practices next week, and if anything holds that back then definitely he should be ready for East Carolina in Week 2.
  • DB Cam Smith is still out but Beamer is hopeful that he'll be ready by Week 1.
  • WR/TE E.J. Jenkins is back practicing after taking some time away last week for "personal reasons".
  • LB Darryl Ware is still out but Beamer feels he should be good to return next week.
  • DT Rick Sandidge and WR Trey Adkins are both still out.
  • No new injuries were had from Saturday's scrimmage that would keep any players out of the opening game against Eastern Illinois.

I like listening to CSB's press conferences. He has been a breath of fresh air to the program.  I'm just hoping that he can make it through his first season and still keep some of his hair.
