IF, (a huge word) there is a new coach next year, who will it be?   Phil Kornblut is reporting that his sources say that Bob Richey of Furman could be a person of interest.   He knows the high school talent in SC.  He has done well at Furman.  He is young (38).   He could likely be hired for much less than Frank is being paid.  I would be very happy with him as the new coach.    There are others I could probably like, but Richey would be fine with me.

I would be surprised if Boynton or Bobby Hurley would be interested.  Hurley just got a commitment from a five star big man, and Boynton has talent returning next season.

I would be fine with keeping Frank too.  I just hope whatever happens will be for the best.

CofC wasted no time picking up Pat Kelsey, who I would imagine would have been near the top of the list for replacements.  I am not sure who else is out there to consider.  I've heard BJ McKie mentioned a few times, but I have not followed his coaching career.

He's currently an assistant at Wake Forest.

Call me crazy... but here are some names I'd look at:

  • Porter Moser (Loyola-Chicago),
  • Kyle Keller (Stephen F. Austin),
  • Kellen Sampson (Asst. @ Houston)
If we want to stay with known quantities, and play pay a significant salary:

  • Mark Turgeon (Maryland)
  • Steve Pikiel (Rutgers)
  • Shaka Smart (Texas) - EDIT: Took the job at Marquette as of noon-ish on 3/26/21.
Long shots, due to their records, but worth an interesting look:

  • Maurice Joseph (Asst. @ George Mason)
  • Ed Cooley (Providence)
  • Jeff Capel (Pitt)

Moser would be tough to get. He can probably pick his spot at this point and he has midwest roots. I could see him landing at his alma mater Creighton someday once they decide to move on from Mcdermott for his racist comments

Keller would be great. Just an outstanding choice. I want a coach like him that coaches a system, particurlay a defensive based system that shares the ball on offense

I really hope we keep Frank Martin for at least another year. Give him an extension and argue off of a huge buy-out (or any buy-out).

I would like to see him stick around.

That makes two of us @GregoryHouse.  I'm convinced that he's got plenty of gas left in the tank, unless health issues take him away from the game.  I also am convinced that we have the current players to be quite competitive and be an NCAA-type team (or at least make a deep NIT run).

I honestly don't think there's any serious talk, at this point, about him going anywhere.  Was just "playing the game" with this thread, since there's no other Men's hoops news going on at the moment.

As I have argued in other threads, I don't think Frank is leaving.  Nor should he.   And now, the news is that he is not leaving.   Lots of people are saying that the BOT does not want to pay his buyout and therefore want to keep him.   And lots of people think USC screwed this up.  But really, we don't know what has been going on.  Nobody has any actual information about what has happened, or what has been said between Frank and  Tanner.   Some think Frank has been looking for another job, but could not  find one, but I don't buy that.  Frank has no reason to take another job to keep USC from paying his buyout.  We will have to see what Frank and Ray say publicly before we will know what actually happened.   And they probably won't tell us everything.

Anyway, i hope Frank is staying, and I hope his contract was extended.   But, if Frank thinks he is not wanted anymore by USC, he won't be here long.

I just hope he will get a little more offensive minded with the team moving forward.  Playing defense is great and needed, but we need people that can shoot the ball and make freaking free throws.  Our teams offense is anemic at times and that is just not going to work moving forward.

I can see the BOT not wanting to shell out 6 million just after stroking a check for nearly 13 million to Mr "All gas no brakes."

I concur,  playing good defense is crucial but the name of the game is scoring.

If Tanner and Caslen really do want Frank to leave, as some have said, then Frank now knows he is not wanted by the USC athletic administration.   This is bound to affect his relationship with both Tanner and Caslen.  Negatively.   I suspect that if Frank gets an offer from another school that he likes, he will accept it.    He doesn't strike me as a guy who wants to work for people who don't want him.   Will be interesting to watch what happens.

If Frank were to make the NCAAT next year, it will be interesting to see how that affects the attitude of Tanner and Caslen.

There is NO beef with Frank from Tanner or Caslen.  End of story.

That talk is nothing more than rumor mill stuff put out there by disgruntled fans who want Frank run out of of town.

I can believe that.    I know there are Frank haters.  I see their comments on Twitter, on The Big Spur, and on here.   But Frank has a lot of supporters too.  They just don't make as much noise as the Frank haters make.    I just read one guy who said Frank was turned down by UNLV, DePaul, and a couple of other schools that he tried to get hired at.   I don't believe a word of it.  I don't think Frank has been looking for a job at all.  I can't prove that, but if I was him, if USC wanted to fire me, I'd say, go ahead.   But pay my buyout.   I don't believe Frank has been begging other schools for a job, especially in order to save USC money.   Or in order to "save face".  Frank isn't a wimp.  He understands that coaching is a business and that sometimes means you might be fired.   If he gets fired, he'll have over 6 million reasons not to feel bad about it.

Right.

The routine end of season discussions with Tanner and then Frank usually does a presser in April or so after he knows who's staying and leaving and he's finished with recruiting.

It would appear Frank is going to be the coach next year.  If that is true, then I approve.  I've always thought that last season was so affected by Covid and other injuries that it shouldn't be held against Frank.   If there had been no covid, I think the season would have been much different than it was.   Until there is verification from Tanner or Caslen, I don't believe the rumors that have been prevalent that Tanner and/or Caslen wanted to fire Frank.   I also don't believe they were giving Frank some time to find another job in hopes that his doing so would keep USC from paying his buyout.   Frank would have to be a fool to play that game, and I don't believe Frank is a fool.    I hope we find out what really happened.   None of the rumors make much sense.   Anyway, I am happy that Frank will be back, and I hope Covid is not an issue next season.   Now, I'm interested to see who will be on the team, and who won't.

Boynton gets new 7-year deal from OKST.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton has agreed to a seven-year contract extension that will increase his compensation to $3 million annually.

Boynton was set to make $1.85 million for this contract year, though he agreed to a 25% cut in September because the school was trying to trim costs due to the pandemic.

The new contract takes effect July 1. Boynton has a 72-58 record in four years at Oklahoma State. The Cowboys finished this season with a 21-9 record and won their first NCAA Tournament game since 2009.

Boynton is a former South Carolina guard who was a member of the Gamecock backcourt from 2000-2004. He was a part of USC's NCAA Tournament team in 2004 under head coach Dave Odom.

Still a Gamecock, though.  Good on him.  Sa-lute.
