Be careful Bear...
I like Mike (quite a bit. And have had my eyes on him for a few seasons now), but he's got the benefit of having one of the most naturally gifted athletes in the entire country on his team. (Who he did not personally recruit initially, by the way). Cade Cunningham would make even the worst of coaches look pretty impressive (averaging 18+ PPG).
I will admit, that Boynton's last few recruiting classes have put him in pretty good circumstances. He has 5 players averaging just under 10 PPG, and then Cade Cunningham with his skillset, leading the team w/ 18+ PPG. But remember, OSU has been hit by the NCAA with sanctions AND Cade Cunningham stayed with the team mostly because he has family on the staff... Cannen Cunningham.
Boynton's records since taking over at OSU...
- 21-15 (8-10 conference) in 2017-18
- 12-20 (5-13 conference) in 2018-19
- 18-14 (7-11 conference) in 2019-20
This is a coach that has recruited well, but has not had a winning conference record (with the exception of this year), nor a post-season NCAA appearance. He's a coach whose team is currently under sanctions, not of his own doing (thank you Lamont Evans).
I would give him 2 more years to see how he pans out at OSU. If he is able to stabilize the ship and continue to recruit well (which the NCAA sanctions may make difficult), THEN I would consider looking at him. That's actually a realistic timeline for Frank Martin anyway. Frank has the final couple of years on his contract. With this year being such an anomaly, Frank himself may turn things around significantly and this will all be a moot point. Nonetheless... I'd say give Mike Boynton a couple more years to showcase whether he's a "one hit wonder" coach, or whether he puts OSU back in the drivers seat for NCAA appearances (like their Eddie Sutton or Travis Ford days). The main telling point for him will be
how they perform over the next 2-3 years within the Big 12. OSU has absolutely NO sustained history of winning in the Big 12 - Since 2008, they have finished better than 4th place TWICE, and no higher than 3rd in conference at all.
