Where is Hilinski really at?

Jim, I think it’s just a reflection of lack of quality depth.

We have some good players, they’re just getting worn down. We’re not at the point yet where we can swap players in/out at most positions without a drop off in talent. DL is probably our deepest position, and even those guys are getting tired.
Blowing coverages, missing tackles, and overall getting embarrassed is lack of effort or bad coaching.

We have seen Dak play. Now, that said I fully agree he was limited with his hamstring against UGA. He did a good job managing the game, not making mistakes. But seeing him before the UGA game he still struggles with his throws.

It doesn’t matter how much of the playbook they give you, you still have to execute. He’s had the same issues Ryan has had, he’s been off on simple throws that would keep us out of 2nd and long, 3rd and long situations.

I think his running ability is something that would definitely add to his game, he just hasn’t had the chance to really use his legs and stretch defenses. When the D knows the QB isn’t going to run and is struggling even hitting checkdown receivers, they’re going to pin their ears back putting more pressure on some of our young OL.

I’d take Hurts or Fields in a skinny minute. Who wouldn’t?

And calling our HBC “Chump” is just a bad look....the guy’s doing everything he can to win.
Not sure what kind of game you're wanting to play but I am not willing to play. Dak has had less than 30 attempted passes in almost the 2 years that he has been at Carolina. Hilinski and Bentley gets that before the 3rd quarter in the games that they have started. Dak has never played in a game where he has started and been the QB that worked exclusively with the first string offense in practice. I haven't seen or heard of it. And he has played only when thrown in without a specific package that will utilize his skills at that position.

Until and unless we see him afforded the same opportunity the others have had, we will not have had a level playing field from which to make adequate assessment of his skill set. Would he play well? Would he excel? We don't know because we have not seen it, so when some of you make the statements you do with a very limited sampling, I have to conclude that something else is in play with you.

As long as Chump keeps making the decisions he does, that's what I will call him.

Excellent post.  Dak has rarely been utilized when he has seen action.  It's like this staff doesn't even practice anything other than the same tired plays that don't suit Dak (currently) to his abilities.  Any other school, we just saw one, would bring in a player and already have plays and a plan to use that player's skills best.  Not force a square peg into a round hole.  Not saying turn it over to him completely, but he should get an honest look.

Afforded the same opportunity? This isn’t pee wee ball.

He’s been here almost two years. He had the opportunity in Spring/Summer and August workouts to learn the position and show what he can do.

After all of that he was 3rd string, ahead of only a 6’5” WR turned QB and several walkons.

There were plenty of recruiting analysts who predicted he would initially struggle, likely to take 2-3 years at least to develop.

And that’s ok, lots of guys enter college and take a few years to make an impact.

He has a lot of athletic potential, and I hope he figures it out. I’d love to have a QB who can hurt defenses with his legs as well as his arm. He’s been hampered with that hamstring injury, I’d love to see him healthy and see him carve up some defenses.

But if you want to be honest, go back and look at his throws...it’s clear he still needs work, like Ryan he’s missing too many open passes. But you won’t do that, it’s easier to complain.

As for your assertion that he doesn’t have his own “package” of plays, he may not. Or he might. You have no earthly idea, you’re guessing.

As for him not working exclusively with the 1st string? During the season? You’re losing credibility fast. With limits on practice time, barring injury to Hilinski when do you think that’s going to happen? His best chance to work with the 1st string while Ryan was banged up has been limited because he’s been limited with his own hamstring issues.

I hope he can put it all together, if he can clean up his passing he has the athletic ability to take charge of the offense. It’s open for the taking, Ryan is limited running and is having his own issues passing.

Someone who likes Muschamp to the point that they'll invent "facts"?
Who has to invent anything? Are you watching the same games?

I don’t like Muschamp more or less than any other coach. I do believe he had a huge mess to clean up, and has had to deal with a lot of limitations. That would’ve been the same deal with anyone we’d hired as HBC, our program was a dumpster fire when he took over. And like many people I think we MAY benefit from at least a different OC and DC.

You and a few others seem to be butthurt that everyone isn’t on the “Fire Muschamp” train. If I truly thought it’d make a difference I’d agree, but when I look around today at the programs ranging from UCLA to FSU to Nebraska to Arkansas to VT (and more) who have fan bases wanting their flavor of the day HBC’s fired it means it’s a total crapshoot getting the right guy.

I’m curious, you’ve never answered....what was your posting name on CT? Scared to say because you’re one of the loons who led to the owners closing the site?

No need to taunt, Foul here.

I would love to see Joyner get some extended PT but there is a reason that he was not on the field for the last two games ( I assume that he did not play as a WR - if he did, he was not targeted). If you have a running QB that cannot run (he has a hamstring injury - the only cure is rest), then you are better off with a passing QB, even if he is banged up, immobile and hearing footsteps.

The bigger problem against UT was the Defense. We seemed to be focused on stopping the run, thinking that they could not hurt us with the pass. And their two clunker QBs found wide open receivers, and played much better than our passing QB.
Not having any offensive success plays into bad defensive play. If the offense is constantly going 3 and out then it makes the defense play a lot more snaps and also is demoralizing in general.

It also changes the dynamics if an opposing defense is dominating....the opposing offense has more freedom to open it up and play less conservative.

Let’s calm it down a bit, guys. Disagreements are fine, but let’s not escalate it to name calling.

The defense has played well in the first half of games for the most part but we have seen a pattern of them wearing down in the second half.

We often struggle offensively coming out from halftime and are horrible at scoring in the 4th quarter. Not being able to sustain drives is killing this team and puts more strain and PT on the defense.

Credibility? You're kidding right? On a message board? I could care less than a F$%# what folks on a message think about opinions. I don't complain to folks that have no authority, my comments are just like others comments.

Yet there are some facts involved too. You typed that both are missing passes, yet only one plays and the other does not have enough attempts to make a comparison.

Since you want to be honest, Dak really did not have playing time last year either, even when games were over.

Who are the recruiting analyst that can back up your claim?

If the team has a package for him it has not been implemented when he has played in the limited snaps that he has.

I'll stop there because I don't have time for foolishness.

Almost sad I wrote this post. Did not want it to cause issues.

I was just a little awed at how Ryan had been playing. I really think it could be an injury issue. Being he feels injuries led to his brothers condition, he might be a little apprehensive now that he has got hurt a little. Thankfully it has not been head injuries or concussions. My main question, is Ryan really the QB that will carry us the next 3 years? I still feel, if he gets his passing back in shape, he could be a huge benefit to us. The guy could have played anywhere in the SEC but he choose us. Wouldn't it be huge to have a Heisman candidate? If he gets back like he was against Bama, that could be what he becomes. This Saturday should answer a lot of questions. Hopefully, the hits from those earlier games should be healing up good by now; or we were not told how bad it really was.

It is great to know you got a guy like Doty coming, but the idea is to let someone like him be able to redshirt and then maybe play some in a backup the next year. And maybe burn down the house his 3rd and 4th year. Had Jake not gotten hurt, Ryan could have gotten in that RS season. Just pray he is better this week.

Great to see Hilinski back to form. Great passing game. Would have been even better if it had not been for our receivers dropping 4 very good passes.

Where is he really at? Ready to go win some more games and get us in a bowl.

Guy's Ryan really hurting here and really has had a effect on his play. Like elbow tendinitis very painful and throwing man the pain just to let it go so that should be the reason in the long ball. Knee issues also in play here. He is doing all he can.  He is on the heal and might show what he can do Saturday. So just do not judge to much right now. If he was healthy with the issues here then I would be worried.

Hope the article adds to the topic here for discussion.

QB Ryan Hilinski isn’t 100%. How close he is remains unclear, as he’s come through first elbow tendinitis and then a couple knee issues, including a sprain, suffered against Georgia. (VIEW ARTICLE)
They have got to find a way to stop these guys from being punished so much. Hopefully Ryan and Dakereon are well enough to play now, and we can see what they can really do in the next three games. I just hope they have a plan to start moving the pocket, keep an extra back in to block, or throw some slants to the outside guys to slow down the defense. If not, then possibly they can gameplan to where Dakereon can run more than a handful of plays, and have some passes to keep the defenses honest. This run two runs with Joyner on first and second down, then bring Hilsinki in on third down to pass; might have worked against Vandy, but not the last three teams we have to play in the regular season. They have to protect these guys. I'm afraid Ryan is already seeing 6-6 300 lb freight trains coming at him in his sleep, and Jake may not want to come back after watching Ryan get beat up each week.
