South Carolina is coming off a bounce-back win against Charleston Southern, but this week’s opponent is a whole different beast. The Gamecocks are home and against Alabama, the teams’ first meeting since USC’s legendary 2010 upset. What you need to know:


WHAT TIME DO THE GAMECOCKS PLAY?


Who: Alabama (2-0) at South Carolina (1-1)

When: 3:30 p.m. Saturday

Where: Williams-Brice Stadium (80,250)

Gamecock Walk: Approx. 1:10 p.m.

Series history: Alabama leads the all-time series 12-3. The Gamecocks have won three of the past five meetings, those wins coming in 2001, 2004 and 2010. The last meeting was the 35-21 upset of the No. 1 Crimson Tide. USC lost the first 12 meetings between 1937 and 2000, with the Gamecocks scoring 50 total points.

Weather: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 89. Northeast wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%

THE GAME

If South Carolina could win the game, it would make the season and probably be an important marker in the Will Muschamp era. Even if the Gamecocks can fight and stay in, it would be a strong indicator for the rest of the season.

Freshman QB Ryan Hilinski’s debut a week ago was stellar to say the least. Against a different kind of opponent, the team needs to keep him upright and in good condition. He probably can’t hurt his standing because it’s ‘Bama, but if he shows something against that defense, it will say a lot about his potential.

Alabama is just rolling along, dominating folks and trying to stay near the top of the sport. A dominant win maintains, a closer one ends with questions.


SOUTH CAROLINA PLAYERS TO WATCH


1. South Carolina quarterback Ryan Hilinski looked good in his first game, but this will be a different beast. He completed 80 percent of his passes a week ago and had three total touchdowns, but this is a chance to show how high his ceiling might be.

2. Wide receiver Shi Smith hasn’t yet been truly explosive with a modest 68 yards on seven catches. He has the ability to be a big-play option and South Carolina will need to win some one-on-ones in the secondary to have a chance.

3. Sophomore corner Jaycee Horn is going to be covering someone good. Maybe it’s star Jerry Jeudy, maybe it’s someone else, but the second-year player is going to have to deliver stellar play to help slow the Tua Tagovailoa-led attack.


ALABAMA PLAYERS TO WATCH


1. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa may have lost a little luster to Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence in last season’s national championship game, but he’s still a brutally efficient passer and electrifying talent. A strong candidate to go No. 1 in the 2020 NFL draft, Tagovailoa already has seven touchdowns and 563 yards in two games (six quarters) of play this season.

2. Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, like Tagovailoa, is one of the top talents in the country at his position, a consensus All-American and Biletnikoff Award winner. He led the SEC with 14 touchdown grabs last season and already has four this season, along with a pair of 100-yard games. He is also a likely first-round pick.

3. Defensive lineman Raekwon Davis came into his season year as an AP preseason All-American and, you guessed it, a likely first-round pick come draft time. At 6-foot-7, 312 pounds, he can blow up the middle of an offensive line, and the Gamecocks will have their hands full trying to stop him from creating pressure on Hilinski.

BEAT BAMA! I hope..... won't be crushed if we do not, I am watching this game objectively by choice today. 

 
Oh and by the way, for those watching the game on CBS, get ready to hear the announcers drool over Alabama for 3 hours, because you know that's exactly what is going to happen. Hopefully they at least mention the Hilinski Foundation during the broadcast as well. 

 
i watched the 2010 game again last night. They drooled over Bama that day too. They really expected a come back like Bama did to Arkkansas most of the game.

I'm just glad Verne won't be calling this game, seems like he was trying to create some voodoo magic for Bama last time we played them lol

Ryan Hilinski looks fabulous. I think he's going to give a lot of teams fits this season. 

 
Gonna have to beat Bama, the refs, and the replay officials in the same day. 

 
Overall, I really liked the offense. It stumbled and sputtered down in the red zone too much, and we settled for field goals instead of touchdowns. That's something we'll have to keep working on. But this was Alabama's defense, and Hilinski was starting his 2nd game ever in college, and his first ever SEC game against the nationally 2nd-ranked team. So I take that into account.

But otherwise, Hilinski was very impressive executing the offense between the 20s. He moved the offense down the field consistently, was again poised and smooth for most of the game. This wasn't Charleston Southern, this time. And he had his first ever 300+ yard passing game, as a Gamecock.

Rico Dowdle made us forget about Feaster for just one game, at least. He rushed for 100+ yds at a high rate (8.5 YPC), and was even effective as a receiver. Edwards and S. Smith stepped up as our top 2 go-to WRs, to combine for 15 receptions out of 19 total targeted plays, for 169 yards - but only 1 touchdown. Otherwise they were pretty strong, but we need more touchdowns than what we ended up with.

As for the defense: woof! wasn't really too many good spots for the defense today....best thing I can think of, is that it didn't appear anyone got seriously injured today, if at all. That's good, at least.....

 
Open field tackling has lots of issues. There were way to many whiffs and this points back to the coaches. I would be chewing some azz....there are tackling discipline and  technique issues.  There are better ways to do open field tackles. 

We were suckered most of the game on those play-action crossing passes....if nothing else, we need to add those to our playbook. We were missing some of those kind of plays. 

With one or two exceptions, none of our deep threats were really open. I was disappointed in Ortre's effort. 

That reverse sweep with Bryan Edwards was a great play for us. Bryan is a beast with the ball in his hands. He'll go high in the draft.

Just getting home from the game and agree with this.  Our Dbs don’t or can’t tackle, period.  It’s embarrassing to yearly make someone’s highlight reel.   They’re soft and slow vs a physical team.    Rico was a beast.  Same for Edwards and the TE play as a whole was impressive.   We have a special player in Hilinski if he gets some help.  Bama got some calls it appeared in person but they thoroughly beat our defense.  We could compliment their play in many areas but in person I was amazed at two things;  their tackling and their WR blocking downfield.   Very good players and excellent coaching.
