Evaluating Muschamp tenure at the helm so far. I wanted to do this earlier. If you do it right after a lose or a big win you just get a reaction which at the time will not reflect your true view point. As a manger I view it as If we have to evaluate a employee or employees under us. We give money to our school so in a way but a very very small he works for us. 4 keys to use, like a pay hike or just to go over what you would like them to do better or pat on the back or just let them go. The later can be dangers now a days. So lets break it down.

  • Pay hike?
  • Keep the same?
  • What he needs to do to get a hike in pay?
  •  Do you release him?
Why you say so any of the above.

Historically speaking, he's no better or worse than most of the others.

Except the 33-6 years, Spurrier was not any better.  The same for Holtz with his two bowl years.

I find it odd that we have really had no go-to play-makers on defense during his time here.

The No Name Defense.

No damn way he gets a pay hike!  His strength has always been defense so why the hell is ours so bad?  Missed tackles all day and our corners were playing so far off their receivers that it would have been impossible for Bama not to make the reception and then after the catch, all abilities to make a tackle were forgotten or maybe never there to begin with.  The offense looked much better and could get to the point of excellent if we blocked consistently.   Hillinski looks to be the real deal and if he gets a little time, could carve up most defenses.  I like Muschamp but he needs to start getting things in order or we will need to move on.  There is no reason for our defense to be this bad!  I

Certainly no pay hike! As other posters have asked, why is our defense not better? I recognize that recruiting is very difficult here at USC, not only because we have little or no track record of a great football program, but also because of the other SEC schools ( and Clemsux) that we are recruiting against. It's an uphill battle at best. I believe the change to Hilinski gave Muschamp another year. I also believe that if he goes then Tanner should go also.

He has one big win (michigan) spurrier had the kind of wins that give you hope by this point in his tenure. I also believe Lou had some too. No raise. Don't fire now. But better to let him go before the ship starts sinking and the next coach has to fix it, so he's gotta be on the hot seat now or in the very near future.

If you evaluate where we are now compared to where we were when he was hired there is definite improvement. People have the unrealistic expectation of someone being able to turn us into a national title contender overnight. I still have doubts about Muschamp, but I believe he deserves a few more years to get the program depth where it needs to be. However, we are fooling ourselves if we think we can get to the level of Clemson, UGA, and Bama without a culture change among our admin and boosters. The landscape of college football has changed and if you want to recruit at an elite level you have to be willing to pay for it.

Stay the course. He is getting top level recruits....it will take some time. He seems fully capable of adapting to the changes thrown at him. When he starts bringing home trophies, then and only then do you consider a pay hike....meanwhile I remain a Muschamp supporter.

That being said, GO GET US SOME TROPHIES...... "Forever to Thee"

I think you are right on the money with your comments.  We have an extremely difficult schedule this year and yesterday's game was one of the worst by refs that I have seen in a long time.  We got "tick-tack calls against us" while Bama was "mugging some of our players", but this happens when you are an elite program like Bama and you have tradition at your school.  It's almost like the NBA days of Michael Jordan and others that could "walk with the ball - always get the tick-tack calls and for the most part get away with murder".  I said all of that to state that when the Gamecocks were on a roll in the first quarter - the refs broke our players spirits with calling back several key plays - while at the same time allowing Bama to do the same thing and get no flag????  I also want to state for the record that we got beat by a much better team - but the score should have been much closer and it's hard to keep your players focused and playing an uphill battle against Goliath when the refs take away great moments by your team.

I think it way too early to discuss raises or extensions for Coach Muschamp & Staff now.  We all knew that this was going to be a very, very, hard, season for our young team and losing your starting QB only added to the misery.  Ryan H has come in and performed excellent and is only going to get better.  This season is going to be a "Rocky Balboa Game" each and every week with the exception of one or more teams on our schedule.  We can't buy out Coach Muschamp's contract - nor should we as he inherited a cluster freak when he got here and I don't know of a single coach in the nation who could have done a better job with the circumstances that Coach Muschamp has had to work under (exception maybe Saban - due to his name and history).  As Acockolypse stated; we do need a culture change and the landscape has also got to change and I still think that in "some deep dark way - these elite schools - especially Pickens County Tech - are getting extra enticements to these 5 * athletes to not only get them to their schools, but also keep them there for 4 years"???????????

We have a good, young, team that is getting better each week, but as always (including myself), we, Gamecocks want it sooner than it is going to happen without some very drastic changes in culture and our recruiting/dealing with elite athletes and if we do  go that route you will have success - but the fallout can also damage your program for years afterwards.  Tough call to make - do things like we are doing now - or change the culture to increase our offers????

The other point to consider is this: Is our team better, top to bottom, than when he took over?

I would answer yes to that, even if we still have a ways to go. Talent and depth are much better, and there are signs that it will continue to spike.

No raise - I think that Ray might have gotten carried away with the initial success and given up too much already.
Yeah he did. I know a lot of fans were hoping for a 9 win season to attract and land top prospect.  That's not going to happen now. Being a 11 point dog to Mizzu muddling the waters. Face it this is the must win now. How do you tell the prospect we are improving come joins us to win titles. Likely response Why I can go to Clemson and win one the next year.  Lot of challenges ahead in recruiting. Question is how do we take advantage of our woes to get the players we need? How do you get them to buy in when you having a nothing burger?

Until he beats teams of equal talent and stops losing to teams like UNC and UVA, he's headed for removal. He could have Bama's players and still find a way to lose.

If anything saves him, it's Ryan Hilinski not some magical recruiting. His defenses are not doing him any favors.

Good recruiter but needs to be elite to win with his coaching style.  He isn't and elite players don't want to come here for the O and D style he employs.  I heard him speak about pre snap movement on the D last week when preparing for Bama.  The only movement I saw was players chasing Bama's motion.  Nothing confusing or innovative at all.  He has mediocre assistants in key positions but maybe they and he are the best we can get.  Definitely he doesn't deserve any more money at this point nor is anyone knocking on the door to get him away.  Needs to salvage this season, pull out some wins and then have a very good year next year before it's even considered.   Just too many unprepared moments for the team since he has been here.  With all the $ in the program he should have zero excuses for not producing.

Needs to get over the (mental?) hump and learn how to win big games. Idk what it is going to take but it has to change. We also need to recruit better and our defense needs a facelift. I thought he would be able to recruit and coach the defense much better than what we’ve been shown so far.

A head coach is no better than who he hires as assistants and how he delegates....instead of jumping on Muschamp, do we need to look at some of the coordinator positions and look for upgrades?

We may have a window of opportunity here since Muschamp is clearly on his last chance as a head coach of a major program.  I'd use that as leverage to try to keep his salary down while putting all raises towards assistants with the understanding that if things turn around significantly, his pay will increase.  The only problem with this is that he is already paid too much for his production at this point.

We are in no danger at this point of another Power 5 school trying to woo him away from us, except maybe Tennessee because they are desperate. Shawn Elliott would be an upgrade for Tennessee. All kidding aside, I can't imagine any pay raise for Will without greatly improved performance. However if he could beat Clemson, I would personally grant him a pay raise.

After the UNC insanity, I seriously thought that maybe we should let Champ go. Then I realized something, I don't think it is him that is a bad coach, I think we just had a QB that was in a slump, and we needed new blood behind the line of scrimmage. Yes the loss to bama hurt, but at least we showed up, at least we tried, Tua is probably going to win the Heisman this year if Jalen Hurts who transferred has a slump. We played well, I mean how many defenses can say they held bama to less than 100 yards rushing, not to mention we put up 500 offensive yards in that game. I am confident in this team with the new leadership, I just hope the coaches stay grounded and continue to call the plays they have been since after the UNC game.

3 games....one cupcake, one we should have won, and one we should have lost. There is no indication anything has changed since losing to UNC besides a hot QB.

A hot QB doesn't suddenly make a mediocre coach a game day coach.

I like Will. But unless Ryan Hilinski becomes Johnny Football II, I still see Muschamp losing games winnable games. Our defense is headed for being one of the worst nationally.

Mizzou is now a must win game....or it's 1-3.

I was down on BMAC after the UNC game, but the last two games the offense has clicked. Don’t know if it was Hilinski or play calling, but the offense has looked altogether different since Ryan took the reigns. Now as for Travaris Robinson, his defense has not gotten any better. I don’t think it’s lack of talent , I think it’s coaching.

We have a lot of talent on D....a lot of 4 stars and a 5 star. I am not seeing a lot of creative schemes and adjustments needed to confuse and overwhelm our opponents.....we got the players. Lets use them. Good defenses outsmart the offenses they go up against....who is it ? Muschamp or Robinson? Bring back the fire ants.
