What should our response be if Russia invades Ukraine?

To me it boils down to what will Putin do if he successfully defeats Ukraine? Is he going to leave Finland, Latvia, Estonia, Poland etc alone if he's succeeds in Ukraine? I believe the answer to that question is a resounding no.
Exactly - Putin has stated int he past that the breaking apart of the Soviet Union was a big mistake. I don;t belive he will until he either reforms the old USSR, or gets stopped by the west.

Over 1000 posts in this thread say otherwise. Sure politics are intertwined, but we can do so without the partisan bickering. We can, and have talked about this war without bringing up Hunter Biden's laptop, Burisma, Trump, etc. Well, all of us excpet one poster. Everyone else is able to reign it in. I know me and Blitzie have gotten into it a bunch in the old view points forum, and we have managed to keep the partisan stuff out of it. I am tired of warning him.
🙄 You warned me for discussing an article posted, so you can post the article with the politics in it and no warning but when it is discussed, dissected or questioned I'm bickering... thanks again for the warning as if I'm a student and your the teacher...as if I didn't spend 20 years in war zones, as if the rest of us can't be civil in discussing what we should do about Ukraine without being censored and the things I've mentioned are meaningless in the discussion 😀 I often have to play Devils advocate in my job to ensure I haven't grown complacent, to ensure the subject matter experts have not grown complacent, to keep up with new tech... this is because I will never, ever know everything, I always want to be able to have an open mind to ensure we are in pursuit of truth not an agenda... My favorite sayings at work when speaking to large groups are, I can take you to water but I can't make you drink and though there are thousands of ways to skin a cat we have built a box that says you can only skin it inside this box, meaning we have put guidelines in place on how you can skin this cat... putting me in a box on how to discuss war will not happen when others can jump outside that box and if I'm being honest I don't do well in boxes when it comes to debate! I value the opinion of each and every poster on this board and probably value those that differ from mine more as I learn more from them. Though I disagree with some I don't have any less respect of thier opinion and in fact want to know why they have this opinion because I could be wrong!

That was the thought that popped up in my head as well after GMB mentioned the sacking of Poroshenko.

The only thing I will add is that Eastern European cybercriminal groups have penetrated our digital borders long before the current war Ukraine and have received billions of dollars in ransom payments over the years to unlock encrypted computer hard drives. Not just in the U.S. but in Western Europe as well. Remember the hospital chains in the UK that were brought to their knees by hackers several years ago? That put a lot of lives at risk to a certain degree as well.

Now this: https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/24/microsoft-warns-that-china-hackers-attacked-us-infrastructure.html

Several years ago a foreign entity out of Saigon attempted a login attempt on my late mom's estate bank account.

We tend to focus on the geographical part of the war most of the time, but Russia and China are still major threats in other areas as well.

Having said all of the above, the Ukraine war is a damned mess. Longhaul's point about the port access may be a major driver behind Putin's actions as well.
Hmmmmmm Zelensky father, Oleksandr Zelenskyy, is a professor and computer scientist and the head of the Department of Cybernetics and Computing Hardware at the Kryvyi Rih State University of Economics and Technology...

We cannot discuss the current war without the context of the Soviet Union, WWII & and the Cold War. Putin is an old school Soviet commie.

Those areas of Europe, including Ukraine, Poland & Finland all have lots of blood on their soil thanks to the Russians.

And there is no doubt in my mind, that if we don't stand up to autocratic aggression in Ukraine, the domino effect will bring us into some highly destructive wars.
The rest of the world has to know that the US is, and will continue to be the arsenal of democracy, and the sacrafices of our troops over the past century demands us to be vigilant
Zelensky's grandfather is/was an old school commie...

So Poland, Germany, Britain, France... and Europe have been given millions, billions of dollars for decades if that is the case, we have bases all over Europe for this 🙄 but let's give them trillions and weapons to play with if they win... It doesn't make sense to me.

Bravo sir, well stated.

We are obligated to go to war under Article 5 of our NATO agreement if they're attacked. So again, I'd rather the Ukrainians (no matter how corrupt their Government may be) fight the Russians instead of us fighting them.

Russia knows this and will never attack outside Ukraine, who has had ample time to join NATO and the article 5 protection 🙄...

I don't believe (certain) NATO members were that eager for Ukraine to join.
I think the answer is why not and again why are we sending them trillions...
I was in Romania, traveled into Ukraine for fun...
If we hadn't assisted would it be Russian run and what would that mean?

You can bet there are plenty of foreign nationals who think the US is full of corruption. The sword cuts both ways.

One of the griefs of war is that it is full of imperfection decisions that leaders have to make. The lesser of 2 evils will never be a good decision for anyone to make (kinda like voting).

Fortunately, in this context; supporting Ukraine is clearly the right thing....corruption or not!

Just my opinion but I believe that some NATO members didn't want Ukraine because they didn't want to go to war against Russia under an article 5 instance.

Oh cry me a river with the censorship crap. A private website is not the government. Henry, who pays for this site makes the rules decided some time ago that he didn’t want the view points forum any longer because of all the bickering. No more politics.

We’ve let this thread tread a fine line because it’s a relevant current events story, and while politics are obviously involved, it has stayed pretty clear of partisan bickering. Everyone else can follow the rules, except you.

I don’t care if you disagree with supplying weapons, call Ukraine corrupt or always have you. But you repeatedly bring up partisan talking points about Biden, Trump, etc. that is the issue.

I'm of the opinion that Ukraine can't fall to Russia --Russia needs to be stopped.

I'm also of the opinion that I'm tired of the U.S. doing most of the heavy lifting in providing security to Europe. As I'm sure everyone on the forum knows, NATO countries have a membership requirement to provide 2% of their GDP on defense. In 2022, only 7 countries met that threshold. For 2023 if you take a look at the top 10 NATO GDP countries, only 3 are projected to meet that 2% threshold, the U.S. (at ~3.5%, U.K (~2.3%) and Poland (4.3%). The seven top 10 GDP countries that are leaching: Germany, France, Italy, Canada, Spain, Turkey, and the Netherlands. This isn't a new situation, it goes back to the days of Eisenhower.

Germany, for some reason, particularly grinds my gears. They are on target for about 1.5% "defense" spending, but less than 1/4 of that spending is on equipment. Almost 70% is spent on operational costs and pensions. I'm sorry, that's is just BS.

NATO is important, but if it's not important enough to the member countries to pay their obligations, then maybe it's time to reevaluate it's importance to the U.S.

I agree with all of that. I was involved in several NATO exercises and a peace keeping mission and we were indeed paying most of the bills.

I think most people thought the outside aid from our country and others would force Putin into a ceasefire and/or a complete withdrawal within 6 months to a year.

That obviously hasn't happened and I feel that the countries supporting Ukraine don't really know what the next step is right now.

I will freely admit that I don't know, either, at this point in time.

Twitter, Facebook.. private websites as this debate is froth but I agree with you all though it doesn't change the censorship as that is not something privy to just the government nor does it make it wrong. Henry has that right and you are just doing as he has asked, apologies for putting you in that position and much respect for your demeanor! I will try to do better, thanks for the warnings.

Diplomacy as with all wars or conflicts unless we would like to see more Ukranians and Russians die as we inch closer to WWIII, no different than it was 6 months ago...
