Beamer

I more and more like the idea of Beamer.

1) He was here during the Spurrier era and understands how Spurrier runs a program and understands our facilities.

2) He is a great recruiter. He oversaw the classes that performed during the height of the Spurrier era...many who sent players to the NFL.

3) He probably still knows many of the high school coaches in SC/GA/NC area.

4) He is a USC fan and this one of his dream destinations.

5) He is getting great endorsements from previous USC players and other coaches and sports personalities.

6) He has a ton of connections in the league. He has learned under some of the big name coaches of today and yesterday....Frank Beamer, Phil Fulmer, Steve Spurrier, Kirby Smart, and Lincoln Riley.

If I were him, I would basically pitch to recruits that he helped bring in the height of the Spurrier era and now he's going to get the ship back on course and take it to the next level.
In regard to his recruiting, he did well with recruiting when the recruiting office was crap.  Muschamp has built a good infrastructure in the program, and Beamer would have the know how to capitalize on the staff that has been put in place and the facilities.

I have been for Freeze, Napier or Chadwell.  The Freeze ship appears to have sailed, so I'm good with Napier, Chadwell or Beamer.

This is the exact reason why I'm hesitant about Chadwell. I'm not sure if he'll know how to capitalize on the staff and facilities. I think he could learn but I think we need someone who knows what they're doing from the get-go.

I agree with you. I look at Chadwell as someone who has done well with little. I think he would be good with managing the team, but big time recruiting and other aspects would be new to him, having only worked at smaller schools, and there may be a learning curve. Napier, I think has more experience, having been at Clemson, so he may hit the ground running.
Beamer may have the most upside, if he can handle the management of the program. Hopefully he would let his coordinators do their jobs, unlike Muschamp.

JMHO: Chadwell has built  team that would wipe the field with us tomorrow if they played - at a school that invented its football program a decade ago. I’m not worried that bigger facilities would knock him off stride. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other good candidates- but it’s easy to see what he has done on 80% ground chuck - what if we have him a Porterhouse?

I'll probably get pummeled for asking this but, if it is in fact Shane Beamer, would he keep Mike Bobo? Also, who would he bring in as DC? Frankly, I wish Ellis Johnson was younger. I think he's the best DC we've had in quite awhile (full disclosure: he's a distant cousin of mine and I played with him in high school).

Not pummeled at all - makes total sense to me and I think Bobo all things considered called the best plays for us since SOS. Would also help keep Stockton.

The assistant we keep, would depend largely on the relationship between the new HC and the assistant. I would keep Bobo, and Shaw. As far as defensive coaches, bring on a whole new staff.

Has Beamer had an offer to be a OC or HC at a small program and turned them down?  I am ok with his hire for all the reasons mentioned in this thread, but my concern is that he did not take the path of being a HC at a small program like just about any other P5 coach.  Still, given his character traits and ability to recruit, I can support it.  I do like Napier and Chadwell, so if one of those three, I would be happy.  If Beamer, the staff question is tough.  I love the idea of bringing Garrett Riley with him and if that forces Bobo out and by default Stockton recommits, then that is just how it would have to be.  Beamer cannot assemble a staff around a recruit.  Having said that, Riley should have a one heck of a sales pitch for Stockton given what OU has done with QB's the past 5 years.

And the fact remains that Billy Napier is quite simply far more qualified related to just about every measurable aspect of what makes a great head coach candidate...resume...results...record...recruiter...play caller...QB coach...developer of talent...character...coaches son...good wins under his leadership...coaching guys up...compete level...as a player...experience...played college ball in SC...coached in SC...there is...again...no measurable where Beamer grades out higher than Napier.

Agreed. He hasn’t, for whatever reason, had the opportunity to amass those measurables. You would have to hire him with the idea that he’s the right guy to start stacking those up if he got the chance.

Solidly agree. Seems a no brainer....kinda wish Shane was not in the mix. I would love to hire them both.

I think we might finally be getting into the 21st Century by playing a DT QB. If Doty continues to show progress and we hold on to Stockton, we might be on the verge of solving our offensive woes.

WRs are not that bad - remember that Leggett and OrTre Smith have been out. And we have the RBs and a solid O Line. And Bobo can call plays.

Hanging onto Bobo (and Shaw) would really help us keep Stockton and improve the Offensive outlook greatly,

Plus, Bobo is essentially free - we have to pay him 1.2 million next year even if he does not coach,
I wondered what happened to OrTre Smith. Is he out for the season? I thought he was going to be a threat and I like that he is tall. Also, I guess I didn't give Leggett or Brooks their due.

OrTre opted out preseason. He has had a hard time recovering from his kneecap surgeries but I still think he can put together a good season or two - and maybe even make some money in the NFL.

People talk about Beamer's ability to hire great coordinators and assistants - but the reality is typically just the opposite. While he knows a lot of coaches, he cannot bring a lot of assistants from Okie - assistants do not usually do that, out of respect for their former boss. Boom had the same problem in his first HC gig at UF.

Head coaches, even at smaller schools, can put together a better staff. Their top assistants usually follow them.

If we get Beamer, that would mean that he would keep more current coaches than people are thinking - which is not a bad thing for continuity, plus I think that our assistants are better than they have shown. Boom's meddlling held them back.
That's a great point. I think the games with UGA and KY will tell us a lot. Although we may lose both, I'm anxious to see how we play and if we're competitive.  While Missouri isn't a great team the fact that we held them scoreless in the second half is important. That we did it with an inexperienced secondary speaks volumes.

I read the positives on Napier or the Clemson assistant that supposedly Beamer lacks.

There's a thing in Beamer's ledger that will never be in Elliott's. Beamer wants to be here.
if Elliott comes, it's just because it's the college job that is available. I don't see him bad-mouthing Dabo or his program the way that Dabo obviously badmouths South Carolina. We heard his spiel a few years ago after Todd Ellis shot his mouth off.
If he's loyal to Dabo for all the years experience and advancement, that's natural. But that won't fit at South Carolina.
Maybe you hire Elliott because you think it might hurt the Clemson program. But he lost Jeff Scott and there was not a slowdown at all.
Beamer seems to be a coaching hire in the mode of Dabo's hire. Not a coordinator, at all. But much more experience in all apects of the program at all other levels. Great recruiter.

And Dabo was not a "natty winner" until he did two things. Hired Venables and let him do whatever he wanted, and stopped interfering with whomever his offensive coordinators are.  I think, if Beamer is coning in knowing he has to hire all his coordinators, he's not going to make those mistakes. He's going to let his coordinators call all their plays, but have a veto and power to intercede when he thinks the team needs a boost.

If he can recruit like he recruited before, I think the time he takes to turn us into something special is shorter than Dabo's.

ShaneTrain. Of the names that have been floated so far.

Freeze? Forget it. We don't need it. SEC doesn't want him back, and I'm on board with that. Chadwell, he's a fall back. Monken? Nope. I hope Caslen is smart enough to realizes that Monken would not be able to do here what he did at Army.  Napier?  I think maybe he's my No. 2/3 with Chadwell. ShaneTrain.

As Caslen inserts himself in this search their is a less chance in Beamer ball Jr.  Something is changing and the search is moving more toward an experienced head coach. If no Beamer hire by Monday look for the search to go with HC experience.
