Beamer

Biggest ding against Beamer seems to be lack of head coaching experience.

I understand where the ding comes from however off the top of my head I can think of a number of current P5HC's that were promoted without HC experience:

  • Dabo Swinney
  • Kirby Smart
  • Lincoln Riley
  • Ryan Day
  • Sam Pittman
There might be others.

How significant was the lack of experience for the men on this list?

at least smart had coordinator experience though. Not sure abuot the others.

Pittman was never a coordinator, but he was (like Beamer) an Assistant HC and an acting HC - twice.

Day was a coordinator and also an acting HC. Riley was a coordinator and an Assistant HC. Dabs was never a coordinator, but he was the acting HC prior to getting named the permanent HC.
so in short, a pretty big experience gap between beamer and the people listed in the previous post, right?

Similar to Pittman - Beamer was HC for a bowl game at VT, Pittman was acting HC twice.

And Beamer actually has a better resume than Dabs when he became acting HC  - although Dabs did prove himself as acting HC prior to getting the full-time job.
thanks for the details.

I think the bottom line is who can identify and lure in the best assistants and understands how to run a program.  Pittman made some great moves with Odom and Briles and seems to have a good understanding of the other aspects.  It is a little concerning to me that Beamer has been around P5 programs for a long time, but there does not seem to be a lot of interest from any other teams in hiring him as a HC.  Makes you wonder.

And had been with the program for five years prior to taking over the interim job...a program that was absolutely LOADED with talent in part because of the job Billy Napier did as the Recruiting coordinator in 2006, 2007 and 2008...Clemson being a pre-season top ten team with elite talent all over the field and then failing to coach up all that talent was the reason Tommy Bowden got fired in the first place.

I don't see any upside to Beamer over Napier...none maybe other than his last name

Agreed, unless you consider some of the intangibles that are totally entirely in the eyes of the beholder (or interviewer) ... but I agree with you. A Beamer hire followed by the retention of Bobo and the hiring of Mason as DC would have two solid coordinators with HC experience to provide insight as needed, perhaps? I am still hoping for Chadwell or Napier, but we will see.

but if the best attribute for someone is the people he brings along, then we should look at the people he is bringing along...I just don't want to be an experiment as they never seem to work out...brad scott still has blazed a place in my mind and checked all the boxes and failed miserably.  I just really want someone who has proven they can do more with less...maybe I am giving Spurrier too much credit for his time here and that Beamer was the impetus but doing well at big time programs does not translate to success at USC in my view

Ok, I am now  officially on the Shane Beamer train.  they need to  hire him an defensive guy that is the best in the country.

get the monies to pay the assistant  staffs he needs, that is going to be the key. Derrick Mason would be choice for D.C. he is one of the best at this.

2nd get rid of everyone except Conner Shaw , all others need to leave now, including Ray Tanner, Then go get Riley's brother for O.C., THEN YOU CAN SET SAIL .

THIS!

And quickly.  The recruiting class is falling apart and time is of the essence to salvage something.

Why would you get rid of Des Kitchings?

Pittman did make good hires with Briles and Odom, but neither was exactly an unknown - I think that we could do the same with, say, Bobo as OC and Mason from Vandy as DC.

But we can get those guys with any of our head coaching candidates. In fact, we already have Bobo under contract for next year and would have to pay him if we replace him.

So it comes down to this - who would be the best head coach, and do they have other good coaches that they could bring with them?

Beamer is still an unknown as an HC, and he will not be able to pull many assistants from Okie - out of respect for Riley. Coaches that are already HCs could bring in some of their current staff - at least the better ones.
The real reason also on  the Beamer Train is that he has ties to an lot of the big time high schools in the southeast , and has an few up north. I really think he did an good job as an special teams coach and just look who he helped get.  Right now yes we're an power 5 school are we big time no, never have been and I think South Carolina needs someone who can change the culture with the fans and the boosters as well as the media.  He could say look I 've been here before and helped bring back some  winning, now we're going after titles when will you be there spring or fall . You can step in and play right now.
