College Football Countdown: University of South Carolina

Jim Carlen's 1981 Gamecock team, led by QB Gordon Beckham, upset the undefeated #3 ranked North Carolina Tarheels 31-13 in Chapel Hill, NC on October 24, 1981. At the time, this was the highest ranked team the Gamecock program had ever knocked off.

Jim Carlen's 1981 Gamecock team defeated the NC State Wolfpack 13-12 on Halloween, 1981. This video clip features the USC Gamecocks' go ahead drive with key runs by RBs Kent Hagood and Johnnie Wright against the NC State Wolfpack in the 3rd quarter of that game before a packed house at Williams-Brice.

The Gamecocks would finish at 6-6 in what would be Carlen's 7th and final year as Gamecock head coach.

The TD would put the Gamecocks up 14-13 with 11:13 left in the 3rd quarter. RB Ryan Bethea would also run 17 yards for a TD to put the Gamecocks up 21-13 with 7:27 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Cornhuskers would then score 17 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to win 30-21 in Lincoln.

All but two of his 25 victories came on short tracks. The two “big track” wins both came in the Coca-Cola 600, including the 1967 race in which he led a dominating 335 of the 400 laps. That laps-led mark held nearly five decades—until 2016, when Martin Truex Jr. led 392 laps to win that race.

Zeb Noland completed a 66-yard TD pass to Jaheim Bell down the middle to cap off a 3-play, 78-yard drive in the 2021 Duke's Mayo Bowl against UNC. Kai Kroeger then hit Nick Muse for the two point conversion to put the Gamecocks up 15-0 over the Tar Heels in Charlotte.

The Gamecocks' 38-21 victory over the Tar Heels would give first-year head coach Shane Beamer his first bowl victory as a head coach.
