Corona virus, the non-asshole thread

K-12 here in WA has a mask mandate for the school year. I am baffled that anyone could think that public health is better served by not having one, especially given that all kids under 12 can't even BE vaccinated yet? smdh
We are supposed to find out tomorrow with the school board. They have always said they will follow CDC guidelines, but are getting pressure from anti-mask / anti-vax parents to not require masks.

I agree from a public health standpoint this makes zero sense. There have already been 2 outbreaks recently in schools for kids that in the year round program.

Are they seeing a large increase in the percentage of kids under 12 with Covid?  I have not looked for data, just asking?

I think while school is out the answer is "not yet" - the fear is what will happen when they gather again, unvaxxed and unmasked. But the Delta variant is, without question, hitting younger people harder than the original strain.

agreed…we are about to find out

Hopefully it goes well.  These kids need to be in school.  The ones with poor support systems at home a really suffering without in person classes.  Thankfully both of mine went to in person all of last year with no issues and they have a good home support.  I cannot imagine the ones that don't and cannot go to school.

awesome tales from the COVID wasteland of East Tennessee

as an aside...our local team had to let every player go earlier this season b/c one of the players who was cut threatened to come back and kill everyone...he referred to it as Columbine 2.0...he at the time was a pitcher for the Univ of Kansas who grew up here and apparently had tons of issues
holy crap!

A vaccinated co-worker of mine and her daughter (also vaxed) just got Covid.  Delta strain.  They have been sick for a week - at home thankfully.  They got from attending a wedding which was outdoors. The bride went on her honeymoon and tested positive when trying to leave and had to stay 10 days in quarantine at the resort.  Unfortunately, this stuff is still spreading.

ouch.

Heard on the radio this morning that 1 in 5 new cases in the country is in Florida - and Florida just said that mask mandates wouldn't be allowed in schools.  If I was a parent in FL I would be concerned ... ?

Damn - This delta is no joke.

I would think some parents in FL are concerned, but many may not be.  People have so many different views on the virus, masks and the vaccine depending on where they live and politics.  People have very strong beliefs on both sides.

It is no joke for sure Spur.  Her husband had Covid last year and got the vaccine.  He was at the wedding but did not get Covid or at least had no symptoms.

I realize you are a mod but this is awfully close to being political...if you want some true discussion re-open that forum

With the Viewpoint forum shuttered, we expect this forum will get more use and have more topical discussions, which is great. Remember to present your thoughts and ideas with respect for your fellow Gamecocks, however; whereas that forum was a no-holds-barred, no rules affair, all posts in this forum fall under the good-conduct rules for the rest of the site. Be respectful. State your case. No name calling, no politics or religion. If that occurs, that post will be deleted and a warning issued, with further violations incurring suspensions or banning. We don't want conflict and argument to be the norm on this site, but encourage discussion and differing views expressed under the umbrella of "we will have to agree to disagree."

I read the rules and you make a post about policy which is political...not sure your point to be 100% honest

I would contend that this country cares very little about the spread of COVID as seen in many facets of society...we are about to be wiped out again

One crazy thing that has come out of this whole fiasco is some crazy pay increases for healthcare. I just saw an add for a 26 week ICU contract in ND, $142k.

That's unreal.

A post about a policy isn't political when you are discussing the policy and not ranting about the governor or about the party you don't like, or about "how anyone who could possibly be for it is a moron" - in other words, the kinds of "real discussions" that happened every day in the politics forum. I am discussing a covid policy and its impact on parents and kids, in a thread about covid. That's all. Can you be respectful of those with different opinions than you have in a post that could be construed as political? If so, great, we'd love to hear what you have to say.

That's my point.

I hear what you are saying but 70% of the country has been vaccinated (thank god) - so it's not everyone.
