Corona virus, the non-asshole thread

I think you need to sign up for a free account. I do not have a NYT subscription and can access it, but maybe I had to sign in with a free account initially.

It breaks down percentage by different age groups. 65+, 18+, 12+ and total population by county.
awesome...thanks!

STS - lingering symptoms is something my wife and I think about.  I am not worried per se, but concerned and being as safe as we can - vaccinated, mask and honestly only allowing vaccinated people into my home.  That may seem harsh to some, but it's my house, my rules.  My wife has Ataxia which does not make her more prone to Covid, but she worries about lingering effects.  She has enough issues with Ataxia and does not need to add something else to her health.

I think those rules are amazing...we have the same rules as long as they are eligible...my youngest is 8 so we let his friends in (as long as their parents are vaccinated)...the harsher the better in my view

Homebrew, were you the member asking in another thread about trikes for your wife?  If so, how did that work out?  What did you end up getting?

Yes that was me.  We are still doing some research so no purchases yet.  I have been side tracked with work and some parental health issues.  I need to get back to it.  Ideally, I would love to find somewhere we could test drive a few.

Hope you find something that works for your and your wife.  Best of luck with that.

Florida reported a record 22,783 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, its highest single-day case count since the pandemic began last year as the state continues record-breaking hospitalizations for the fifth straight day in a row.

Florida COVID: 22,783 cases added, highest daily count | Miami Herald

One month ago, the daily new cases for the entire country was 1/2 of that. I have some thoughts about your governor, but will keep them to myself since the viewpoints forum is gone.

So I will just say... Stay safe Yancey!

Last 24 hrs via Facebook. We're back in the soup people.....

  • One friend's son in law is in critical condition...intubated and survival is day to day. This may be at MUSC.
  • Another friend posted about 2 of their friends who passed recently from CV. This is from Arkansas.
  • 2 more friends (a couple) posted about getting the CV, being miserably sick for 2+ weeks and begging people to get the vaxx. They are still not well.  They are now in FL but originally from Charleston.

Likely none of these were vaxxed.

Sad - didn't have to be like this. At least not this summer wave.

I am not so sure.  The vaccine appears to be more of a shot at this point and is not stopping Covid.  With other countries not having access to the shot and the shot not actually killing the virus, we were and will continue to be subject to variants.  We certainly could have done a better job getting vaccinated as a country, but I think we will be dealing with this thing for years to come.

How do you know? Most of the people getting sick are not vaccinated.

The vaccines will stop nothing if people don't get them.

Because there are cases of people with the vaccine getting COVID.  I know two people that have been vaccinated and ended up sick for a couple of weeks.   I am not knocking the vaccine at all and think people should get it.   I just am wary when people say this could have all been avoided if everyone got the shot.  I am pumping the breaks on that thought.   I don’t recall vaccine breakthrough cases with polio.  Maybe there were.  Just seems like they still have work to do on the vaccine to me

And that makes you able to say the vaccine will not stop the disease? How many people do you know with the vaccine that did not get sick? We both know no one knows.

And if everyone got vaxxed, would the CV go the path of other viruses?

Maybe but we don’t know.  I am all for everyone getting vaccinated, but how many other vaccines in the past had breakthrough cases?  I am not sure it is all figured out yet and my comments were pointed at the comment that this could have all been avoided.  I hope this  vaccine is the answer, but I am not sold that we will not need another one that does not allow the person vaccinated to get the virus and or spread the virus.   I am not trying to be argumentative just cannot understand how we plan to eradicate this thing if you can still get it after being vaccinated.

99% of those in hospitals right now are unvaccinated, and your odds of not being hospitalized or dying if you are vaccinated are 99.999%, so the vaccine is absolutely working, even against Delta. Lambda may be a different beast altogether. I agree that we will be dealing with this for a long time, though - because it mutates in the unvaccinated and there are so many out there in this country who won’t get vaccinated  and in the world who can’t get vaccinated.

I don't know and likely no one else either unless there's data available.

But the way we stop the CV is to stop the spread. There is a reason the CV is making a run in areas of low vaccination rates and not as much elsewhere.

Vaccines are never 100% effective. Breakthrough cases should not surprise anyone. Or be used as some sort of proof that they don't work. There is a reason Pfizer and Moderna stated that they are around 95% effective. It means they had a few breakthrough cases during the trials.
