Corona virus, the non-asshole thread

our schools which opened last monday (aug 2) have had 100 cases (students and faculty) of covid since they opened...no mask mandate and about a 55% vaccination rate in the community (from what I understand)

My town’s restaurant association just announced its members will start requiring proof of vaccination to dine indoors as of Aug. 16.
Need more of that. Maybe it would encourage some of the skeptics to get vaxxed. Or they will just counterfit the cards.

That and maybe they take it a step further.  Read earlier that the pfizer shot may only be 40% effective against the delta variant.  Maybe only vaccinated by Moderna are allowed into places.

and what are the penalties for ignoring this requirement?  How to enforce?  On the spot antibody testing or just the piece of paper than can easily be counterfeited? That being said they can do what they want with private business in my opinion so good for them!  I would fear some collateral damage from these kind of rules (however)
If I had to guess I would say they will require original cards only - no photocopies, which would be harder to do … still of course doable.

Share the link if you find it, as I’m a Pfizer guy and everything I have heard so far has been the opposite of that … it’s Lamda that has me worried in that regard.

pfizer still keeps you out of hosptials regardless...the study above is one non-peer reviewed study and since the main outcome I am concerned with when I took the vaccine was death/hospitalization I would contend that I am happy with my pfizer...pfizer still has the same efficacy as moderna of keeping you out of the hospital but maybe not the ability to get the virus

@STS - completely agree with that being the goal.  My original email was more of a tongue in cheek joke about the restaurants keeping non vaccinated people out.  My wish is that everyone that can get the vacc, get it today.

Oh yeah man...absolutely!  I just see people using that 43% number as a reason to not get vaccinated!  I have zero problem with a business requiring proof of vaccination to enter!

Saw something today that 4 educators in FL have contracted covid - and three of them were unvaccinated.

Anyone up for a cruise? Pay for a week and it may get you months out at sea or at a random port somewhere you haven't even thought of. Real adventure and you may get your money back in the end.

I think there were some poor crew members stuck on board for 9-12 months last year.

Double whammy looming for unvaccinated kids:

Early versions of COVID-19 largely spared children but the delta variant proved to be much less discriminating, and has led to more child hospitalizations. Now, health care workers on the front lines say there is another frightening prospect looming: a surge in children diagnosed with a combination of COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus.

Pediatric hospitals in Texas — and around the country — are reporting unseasonably early outbreaks of RSV, a respiratory virus that mostly manifests as a mild illness with cold-like symptoms in adults but that can cause pneumonia and bronchiolitis in very young children. The CDC reports it can be life-threatening in infants and young adults.

Was fully vaxxed with the Pfizer shot in early April.  I have been working outdoors in the triple-digit heat index heat a couple of days a week in my yard for the past several months.  I have been eating in the dining rooms of the few restaurants that allow indoor dining.  Always wear my mask in the restaurant except when eating.  Most people pick up their orders, so now major crowds and less distance to worry about.

The stores I have been to in Columbia up to this point were not requiring vaccinated people to wear masks, but they also weren't checking for proof, either.  They were fairly busy on the weekends and most folks inside weren't wearing masks, including many employees.  I have always worn my mask regardless.

Myself and my immediate family have been fully vaccinated with no health issues.  A un-vaccinated co-worker that sat in the same cubicle space as my sister tested positive several months after my sister got her shots.  My sister was sick for several weeks, but never tested positive and was tested multiple times before being allowed to return to work.

I believe being fully vaccinated will keep you out of the hospital more than anything else.  I know two people who have steadfastly refused to be vaccinated for different reasons.  They are very passionate about it.  No one is going to change their minds.

Got vaxxed right as my age group (57) opened up to avoid the scheduling nightmare that is probably occurring now with so many age groups trying to get vaccinated at once.  My main goal right now is to live as normally as possible without being hospitalized due to Covid.

I wear a mask in every building I go to and haven't been sick at all.  So far so good.

My understanding was that they were on summer break and had not started the school year yet.  Still tragic that three of them lost their lives.

The two people I said refused to get the vaccine are female and have two or more children.

I think things get complicated with medical histories and people are just afraid of the symptoms, either from a vaccine side-effect or the virus itself.

Getting the shots are just a tough call for some folks.  I doubt we will get above 75-80% vaccinated for that reason.

I will get the booster when I my age group is allowed to and just hope for the best.  The cases are spiking in SC and the deaths are increasing, too, but the age demographics for deaths are still in the 60+ age groups.

I am going to get back to a personal fitness routine because I need to lose about 30 pounds and I think physical fitness without heavy social interaction is the way to go for right now.

At some point there has to be a push towards health and wellness to reduce the comorbidities that cause people to die as well.
