Corona virus, the non-asshole thread

The current breakthrough infection data suggests breakthrough infections are statistically insignificant compared to the risks of not being vaccinated at all.

Currently, DHEC is reporting COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases who were hospitalized and/or died to CDC per the reporting change that occurred on May 1, 2021. DHEC is also analyzing data on breakthrough cases and will report this information when it's available.

GET VACCINATED!!

Just saw this news item: 20,000 Mississippi students now in quarantine after the first week of school, with more than 1,000 teachers and staff testing positive. One 8th grader has died. Mississippi of course has the lowest vax rate in the nation, and the districts are unable to implement even mask mandates ... I am dumbfounded that any state could feel this was the safest choice for their children.

I just don't get it.

I get your frustration, but the reason you are so pro-vaccine is from fear of the virus and what we know it can do.  Many of the people that are not getting the vaccine are also choosing so because of fear of not knowing the long-term effect of taking this path.  Fears are driving both behaviors in many of these cases so I don't harbor ill feelings toward those that are hesitant to get the vaccine.  All you see on the news are the people that are totally against it, you don't see the largest demographic are not out being vocal about it, but are just scared to get it.  If you look at the segment that has the highest case of non-vaccinated it is not the people the media is choosing to focus on.
Vaccine hesitancy is one thing. Don't necessarily blame them. I blame the vocal anti0vxxers that spread of of the misinformation on-line. Which leads more people to be hesitant.

Our local hospital just broke its pandemic record for virus patients, 6 months after the vaccine began to get rolled out. More breakthrough cases as caseloads rise - there are just more folks walking around with it, so that makes sense.

My third Moderna dose is scheduled for 11:00 AM tomorrow.  Will report if I grow a third eye or if my lizard skin starts showing through my human disguise

Conservative talk show host Phil Valentine dies after battle with Covid-19

Anti-vaxxer.

Well if nothing else, the pandemic has provided more evidence to support Darwin's theory of evolution. Not just in cases like this, where the weak, dumb, or ignorant die off to strengthen the gene pool of a species, but also showing how evolution works with random mutations of the virus, with stronger variants (like Delta) beating out less strong variants. Survival of the fittest.

I was at Costco today, (Raleigh re-instituted the mask mandate a week or so ago), they had an employee handing out masks at the door to anyone that didn't have one. Probably 95% of the people in there had masks on (though a few below their noses), and then a handful just walking around proudly without one (and I am sure un-vaxxed too), almost with a smirk on their face - daring anyone to say something to them. It made me think about stories like this, and I just thought, there is a good chance they will be in the hospital soon enough, begging for science to save them.

I just hope my 10 year old, who goes back to in-person school tomorrow for the first time in nearly 18 months, will survive the evolutionary pressure of these kinds of bonehead people, until he is able to get the vaccine.

Anyone know why the vaccines aren't being authorized for children under 12? Is it a matter of not enough research yet or has it been found to be detrimental to them?

Anyone else with kids under 12 want to play\?

I heard pfizer expects to have data for kids 5-12 in Sep with hopes to have it approved sometime in Oct, which means around Thanksgiving before they have protection.

Generally I have hear that it always takes more time for kids meds to get approved. kids respond differently to meds, so dosage and side effects are different. Takes longer to sort it out.

But can't come soon enough.

Just saw this one tonight.

Three Dorchester District 2 employees have died from COVID, according to SC for ED.

The organization said Clair Baisley passed away from COVID earlier this weekend. Baisley, who taught at Knightsville Elementary for seven years, had just accepted a job at Spann Elementary as an assistant principal, according to SC for ED officials.

Scott Baisley, Clair’s husband, said his wife fought the virus for three weeks before losing her fight.

“My heart is destroyed right now,” Baisley said on Sunday. ”She gave birth to our son at 34 weeks during her battle with COVID and never got to hold him. Please wake up and realize the urgency in following safe protocols. The doctors are not against us.”

Scott said Clair wore her mask everywhere and was diligent in keeping sanitized.

“She was otherwise healthy and there was no explanation for why this awful disease affected her so badly,” Scott said. “She fought for 3 weeks before losing her fight. Wear the mask.”

SC for ED also reported that Carla White, a cafeteria manager at Flowertown Elementary School, died from COVID this week.

According to SC for ED, Beth Collins, who is a coach at Summerville High School, also passed away from COVID earlier this week.

I don't think the report ever said whether or not they were vaxxed.

a friend of mine sent me this...they see all my posts on FB in which I highlight much of what we talk about here...when I read this article it makes me think of Corpsman...I think that many of us are at this point!  Stay safe!

I realize this is an opinion/editorial but I feel that is a good bit of unspoken truth
Hey, just saw this, thanks.

I worked the weekend and it was wild, holding 20+ in the Er some for 36+ hours. Last night, we intubated 5 (in my shift inherited 3 from days). It got to the point that the hospital can't provide enough O2 pressure to run the vents on a normal settings so they have to set the vents on higher than normal rates. We ran out of RSI drugs in our med room and had to get the pharmacy to bring more. The sad thing is, there is about a 17-20% survival rate once you get a vent. We're doing everything we can, HiFlow O2 cannula and a non Rebreather and they are still sating 80-85%. It's close to a death sentence.

I work with a number of nurses and physicians that for their own reasons are hesitant to take the vaccine. Some have a hx of clots, some are pregnant, or plan to be. Others just want more data and an FDA approval etc. We recently were told that vaccination was going to be required and there was, imo some justifiable backlash.
