Corona virus, the non-asshole thread

Interesting article in the NY Times this morning (at least their moring email blast) regarding the severity of the age skew for Covid, stating "most people are “hugely underestimating” how large the age skew truly is.".  Nice chart breaking out hospitalizations by age group for both vaccinated and unvaccinated based on 9 months of 2021 data from state of Washington.

Makes me truly not understand the huge push to vaccinate young children.

With all the pro/anti vax ideas going around, this is an interesting watch if you have 15 minutes to spare.

Really good point regarding healthcare worker mandates -- mandate logically seems like it should be immunity not vaccines (which would/should allow for natural immunity as a high % of frontline workers have probably already had the virus).  Determine what an appropriate antibody baseline should be and antigen test for that baseline.  The goal should be healthcare workers with high immunity to the virus, that's the end target.

Yeah, seems like it would be the best option, but it makes sense so it will never work lol.

90.7% of the eligible population in my county have received at least one vaccination shot. I was impressed when I heard this. The local officials have done a great job.

did you see waht happened to Southwest (that is what I was referring to) as well as the change in ticketing policy for american airlines?  Basically if they don't have enough staff for a flight (due to not be vaccinated etc) they will cancel the flight and issue a refund and leave you to fend for yourself as you try to rebook flights...would suck to get to Charlotte (or any hub) and then get stuck

Maryland Dept of Health did a study of 6 week timeframe and found 30% of all Covid related deaths were people who had been fully vaccinated.

That seems way too high (not disputing the study) but it sure doesn’t help the vaccination cause. 70% is better than 0 but still high.

Yeah that does not add up. Would like to see this study and learn more.

I read a similar study that put the number in the 25% range which really surprised me and I think it was based off of actual DHEC statistics.  I will check and see if I can fine it.  I think many of these are people with other issues and I seem to remember the majority were older than 65.  I personally know of one, but he was also fighting cancer which compounded his issues.

We have the highest breakthrough rate in the state in my county - which makes sense given that we are among the most vaccinated, so of course many cases, if they occurred, would be breakthroughs. From my analysis of our health department data here, most of the COVID cases of deaths after a breakthrough are still much more likely to happen in older folks, sadly.. My mom is 91 and has had her booster - but I know what kind of a situation it would be if she still managed to get the virus.

Colin Powel was vaxxed but dies of covid. But he had cancer and other issues as well.

yeah he had multiple myeloma...not sure the impact it may have had but any blood cancer or cancers of the immune system would certainly give me pause for concern...he was a great man

FDA clear Pfizer Vax for EUA for 5-11 years olds.
Funny thing my 11 year old wants to get the shot but her biggest worry is what it will do to her swimming if she doesn’t feel well for a day or two. So have to schedule it around a swim meet. I’m glad to know that’s her biggest worry

We have an appointment on Monday for my son to get vaxxed. Halleluiah

Also - Pfizer has announced their own Covid treatment pill.

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/pfizers-covid-antiviral-pill-may-cut-severe-illness-89-percent-rcna4593

The antiviral pill, which is combined with a low dose of an HIV drug called ritonavir, can reduce hospitalizations or deaths from Covid-19 by up to 89 percent among high-risk patients, Pfizer said in a news release.

Albert Bourla, Pfizer’s chief executive, called the drug a potential “game-changer” in a statement.

“These data suggest that our oral antiviral candidate, if approved by regulatory authorities, has the potential to save patients’ lives, reduce the severity of Covid-19 infections, and eliminate up to nine out of ten hospitalizations.”

SA...that is awesome...my youngest (4th grader) is getting his vaccine as we speak!  They got it in last night and the pediatrician called us and asked if he wanted to be first  so we were like Hell yeah!
