Corona virus, the non-asshole thread

After reading about SA's covid infection, I have resigned myself to the fact that at some point I will get COVID...I am so glad that he did well demonstrating the efficacy of the vaccine...this weekend we went to the lake in Georgia and along the way when we would stop for gas in SC we were pleased to see that it appeared that a vast majority of people were wearing masks...as an aside I did stop at this place on 25 off of I26 in Tuxedo NC in which I was masked shamed...not for not wearing a mask but for actually wearing a mask

while I do agree that this is yet another drug (remdesivir and hydroxychloroquine as well) that has not panned out following limited studies (argentina/egypt) I will not sit here and act like the FDA is infallible has always been on the up and up when it comes to people taking things when they are terminally ill...it is shocking that a state institution would give this to inmates

It's really a shame that medication treatments can become politicized (and I'm pointing fingers at all sides).

Arky....

One of the most shocking things for me to learn from this whole Covid dilemma, is how stupid and gullible some people are.

I will never understand it.

What get's me is all these anti-vaxxers who claim the vaccine is unproven and not well tested, etc., have absolutely no issue ingesting experimental horse cream.

absolutely...not to mention all the shitty ass food they probably eat that is pumped fulll of steroids/hormones/(fill in the blank) and not to mention smoking

agreed...and I don't even think stupid/gullible is even the right word(though it applies)...I think steadfast in their beliefs with no chance of being wrong and people taking that pride to their graves...while I may not agree with their choices it certainly impacts the community and that is wrong

unfortunately the world we live in and that is sad

of course we also allow pharaceutical companies to advertise directly to the consumer and I think that is wrong as well (which I realize is not the point of this in the context of this thread)

We are now referring to the medicine that won the 2015 Nobel Prize as “horse cream”, while wholeheartedly taking experimental drugs that have not been through even half of the experimental process the “horse cream” has been through.

Just my opinion: Given the past "miracle cures" that have been trotted out there, when somebody says they are taking a horse de-wormer to help with COVID,  some of the derision is sure to occur, based on the previous "crying wolf" situations. I also think that the three vaccines have been tested vs covid on orders of magnitude more than than ivermectin. That said, if it can help, great.

Ivermectin did win a nobel prize for treating parasitic worms. And yes it is approved in humans and livestock, for worms. It has zero trials done on if and how it treats Covid. Also, many people that cannot get the human version of Ivermectin, are clearing farm supply stores and vets of the 'horse cream' and taking it off-label without proper dosing controls. The animal version is a lot more concentrated because horses are a lot bigger then humans.

So yes - people are taking 'horse cream' for to treat Covid, which has not been studied nor approved by the FDA to treat covid, while dismissing FDA approved vaccines for covid, which have been proven in clinical trials (and subsequently used by 100's of millions of people not just in the US, bot worldwide) to be safe and effective.

Ivermectin has been tested, not for Covid, but for other things. Look at the people in India and read the stats on the people in rural areas who regularly take Ivermectin and how low the Covid numbers are in those areas. I know the argument will be made that they are rural, so they don’t come in contact with it as much, but the facts remain that it works. It is safe for humans in human doses. I have not, and would not take it off the shelf from Tractor Supply, because the dosage would be wrong and I could kill myself. However, when something clearly works, but it is made fun of, because it hasn’t been approved by some governmental entity, that is shortsighted and foolish. When the vaccine has been out less than two years and has not been through the prescribed clinical trials that are supposed to be done over the course of 12-14 years to make sure it’s safe. There are tons of products that were approved that have turned out to be anything but safe. I don’t doubt that the vaccines work for Covid, but the potential side effects can be far worse.

JMHO: The India analogy is framing a data set to support a hoped-for outcome. Not a flame, brother, just my opinion, and I respect yours 100%. I also think to label that ivermectin clearly works against covid isn't supported yet by any intentional data.

Agree, that India is anecdotal, and not cause and effect, but because of the politicization of both the virus and treatment options, Ivermectin will never get a chance at a large scale study.  Much of the media portrayed Joe Rogan's treatment with Ivermectin as vet meds, when in actuality it was prescribed and administered by his physician.  I understand the intent of this kind of misreporting -- to disparage this particular treatment avenue, I don't understand why perpetuating inaccuracies about things that are not known/definitively settled seems like a rationale course of action.  And for the record, I feel that anyone that self-treats with vet products is much like those individuals acting as their own lawyer...fools.

Swayin - I don't think this line of conversation is political, but if others disagree, I have no issue with you deleting.  I struggle with the conflicting thoughts of should I reply or not -- knowing that in continuing this conversation that someone will inevitably cross the line of simple discourse.  So I took the easy way out, and will let the mods determine.

there are zero actual studies...anecdotal evidence is fine if that is what you wish to base therapy upon....your example ignores all the factors that contribute to someone getting covid and is nothing short of confirmation bias.  I hope that ivermectin works but to tout it as anything other than anecdotal b/c of the paucity of controlled study is dangerous...have you seen the studies out of Argentina or are those incorrect due to their outcome?

As for the vaccines...you very well could be correct about side effects and people may die waiting for them to manifest themselves...but then again you could be wrong thereby potentially exposing others...I just hope you are masked up
