Corona virus, the non-asshole thread

Posted on the main page but I think it bears further discussion.  USC is planning to start back in the fall but hasn't been completely clear on what classes will look like.  Smaller classes have been mentioned, obviously more online classes, and others with more restrictions.  The problems USC and many universities are facing is the out of state tuition and what it brings in revenue to the schools.  They're not willing to discount online classes nor clearly define how many will be online.  Out of state students facing uncertain economic conditions, possible seasonal covid issues aren't excited to come back and pay full oos tuition prices, rent, food and so on.  They can stay home, take what is essentially a commodity now in online courses and then make decisions later.

I received an e-mail yesterday about ordering football tickets so I guess at this point it's proceed as normal.  Of course that's subject to change.

It's hard to blame out of state students for being cautious, especially without any discount or guarantee to the semester, I would be cautious and probably skip a semester as well.

What we do not know is how this will change things permanently. More people will work from home in the future - it was already a trend but the virus has accelerated it. Same with online classes. Student debt is already a major issue across the country, and taking classes online can avoid incurring that massive debt.

Remember that money is more scarce than ever because so many are out of work. I see a major drop-off in enrollment for the next few years - and we may never get back to where we were. Sad, but such is the new normal.
Agreed.  The online universities will prosper and were already better prepared as students / parents don't want the risk right now.  It will be interesting to see how this changes things on campuses in the near future and how that affects athletics through fan attendance, funding, donations etc.

Scientists in China believe new drug can stop pandemic 'without vaccine'

A drug being tested by scientists at China's prestigious Peking University could not only shorten the recovery time for those infected, but even offer short-term immunity from the virus, researchers say.

Sunney Xie, director of the university's Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Genomics, told AFP that the drug has been successful at the animal testing stage.

"When we injected neutralising antibodies into infected mice, after five days the viral load was reduced by a factor of 2,500," said Xie.

"That means this potential drug has (a) therapeutic effect."

The drug uses neutralising antibodies -- produced by the human immune system to prevent the virus infecting cells -- which Xie's team isolated from the blood of 60 recovered patients.

A study on the team's research, published Sunday in the scientific journal Cell, suggests that using the antibodies provides a potential "cure" for the disease and shortens recovery time.

Xie said his team had been working "day and night" searching for the antibody.

"Our expertise is single-cell genomics rather than immunology or virology. When we realised that the single-cell genomic approach can effectively find the neutralising antibody we were thrilled."

He added that the drug should be ready for use later this year and in time for any potential winter outbreak of the virus, which has infected 4.8 million people around the world and killed more than 315,000.

"Planning for the clinical trial is underway," said Xie, adding it will be carried out in Australia and other countries since cases have dwindled in China, offering fewer human guinea pigs for testing.

"The hope is these neutralised antibodies can become a specialised drug that would stop the pandemic," he said.

What’s everyone home state doing? Mine partially reopened but the county I live in is not following those guidelines. Says it’s too early to reopen without more data. Yet the pool we belong to is open as a “tennis and walking” club. So it can open to keep from refunding membership dollars even though people don’t use the tennis courts and go mainly for the pools.

Most younger people I've seen don't have any concerns about the CV. Since few of them are getting sick, I can understand this. I saw dozens of groups of them yesterday on a popular hiking trail clustered together.

I went to my gym on Wed around 2 PM. The treadmill area was almost empty, but the dumbell area was loaded with young people. I saw one teen sitting and constantly handling his phone. They are not concerned with any kind of surface contact with the CV.

Seems some places that are open, are not seeing customers return in large numbers. Lots of people are still cautious.

This may have changed some social patterns for a while....especially restaurants.

where I live it is like nothing ever happened...it is scary....I go out in public and I am in the minority wearing a mask

Of course we have only had like 37 known cases (and none still active) since the beginning and have had at least 25-30 small business not be able to re-open and closed forever

STS, I gotta move out near you. At a respectable distance of course. My county alone has 5,100 confirmed cases over time. and that was as of the 20th. Wont get data from yesterday until 10am ish.

State of Md, 43k. Prince George's County alone 12k. Right near DC.

Hard to judge what will not reopen for good, given that most things arent open or only partially open

yeah man...my town has about 50K people and mainly single family homes that are spread out.  I am sure we have far more cases that are asymptomatic though I will say that a friend of mine who is a GI doc has told me that they have yet to have a patient test positive for antibodies that did not already have covid...he tested me as well lol.  Small town living my friend in the midst of the smokies lol

Things are getting crazy in my little rocket launching river town.  Looks like this summer may see us in a shooting war

Just got word that I'm going back to the office on Monday. Apparently we're going to have alternating weeks of in the office and telecommuting. On the one hand, I'm ready to get back to the office. Too many distractions at home when I'm working. On the other hand, it has been nice being able to sleep later, not have to drive to downtown Columbia, and wearing gym shorts and t-shirt while working.

I got to say, the best part about the shut down was I could get to work in 15 min tops. Now all these "non-essential" peeps make it take 25 min.

Working from home definitely has its benefits with the dress code.  Somehow I've managed to workout more, put in more miles each day and still eat a ton and gain weight.
