Evaluating Muschamp tenure at the helm so far

Next year will be rough and I don’t think he will survive barring a major turnaround.  It’s a shame too because if you take a look at the roster and the freshmen and sophomores on this team.. we look to be absolutely loaded in two years when these guys will be juniors and seniors.  Not to mention this next years class coming in.

Seriously, take a look at this current roster and the number of young kids that are going to be studs by their senior year.  It’s impressive.
Ah.. the unofficial Carolina motto. "wait till next year".

Sorry, I am tired of spending money on a program that is declining. Every year they raise GCC dues, and yet we are not seeing it pay off where it counts, on the field in wins and losses. Yes, we have pretty new club seats, and a pretty walk way, and a huge gym, but when does that start producing on the field?

After their 1st or 2nd year is when they start dropping off, hitting the portal, moving on.....

His '17 & '18 recruiting classes were Top 20. How many of them still on the team?
This is your Junior and Senior class in 2 years:

Ryan Hilinski, RJ Roderick, Josh Van, Jabari Ellis, Dekereon Joyner, Kingsley Enagbare, Israel Mukuamu, Jaycee Horn, Hank Manos, Ernest Jones, Rick Sandidge, Dylan Wannum, Zach Pickens, Javaughn Gwyn, Kevin Harris, Rodriguez Fitton, Jakai Moore, Jaylen Nichols, Jammie Robinson, Xavier Legette, Ortre Smith, MJ Webb, Chad Terrell, Cam Smith, Shilo Sanders...

Thats a lot of guys who will have earned 3 and 4 years playing experience out on the field.  Not to mention the class coming in right behind them that is very good.

Some of y’all aren’t paying attention to what’s really happening here.  I’m sorry his 1st recruiting class (put together in 2 months) didn’t all pan out, but he’s clearly made up for it and continues to do so.

...but when does that start producing on the field?
To me, this is the biggest question that no one will answer.

We're told to be patient the wins will come, but no one says when. Or when we should start seeing tangible improvement. Then they call us entitled and fair-weather when we get grumpy that we don't see any progress. It's maddening and a bit manipulative.

Personally, I've been on a roller coaster with Muschamp. I didn't like the hire because of Florida. Got convinced he wasn't given a fair chance there (he was). I like him superficially as a person it seems. I gave him a pass for the first two years. Expected to see some strides in year 3 and was disappointed (bought the pre-season hype). Didn't expect much from this year, but somehow I'm again disappointed. The Georgia win was nice, but it's the only real good win (unexpected) in his tenure. He's had way more bad losses, not that it matters because we aren't even close to sniffing where bad losses actually hurt anything. This year I've both thought we're probably headed in the right direction and thought we definitely aren't. I honestly don't know which is the truth, which means we might not be moving in any direction at all. 2020 will be probably only one or two wins better than 2019, which leaves us someplace around where we were his first year. If that happens (and I expect it will), it means we will have made no on-the-field progress in 5 seasons. How would that be justified or defended when the stated goal is "championships"? You can't ever get there if you don't take steps.

Somebody tell us when to expect to reach the goal. Then we can stop wringing our hands about getting there.

See 2 posts above...

its never a good sign when the AD and school president have to come out publicly and say they stand with Muschamp and he is our football coach...for now.

I follow the logic. However - and no offense intended by this - a fan's justification is not what I was referring to.
None taken.  It does appear though that we will be very good in 2021.  Muschamp probably won’t be the one coaching them but at least whoever is will have some talent and experience.

I agree the talent (and experience) will be there in two seasons, which presents me with a dilemma - shouldn't Muschamp get the opportunity to prove himself with those guys? On the other hand, there isn't much being shown right now to give me any encouragement that he'll be able to do anything with them. Which brings me back to my question the people in charge should answer - how long is patient enough? And to your point, someone who can win football games *should* be able to work with that roster, if Muschamp is replaced.

Do we have any optimism that the people hiring a new coach will get it right? Not sure I can say that I do.

I know this does not answer your question but anyhow Pollack and GD Crew said this earlier. "If you can’t do it in 3 years your not going to do it all referring to coaches needing 4-5 years at a school and needing their own recruits." Also, Lou Holtz said the same thing too a while back.

Mr. Ed said it best  It does appear though that we will be very good in 2021.  Muschamp probably won’t be the one coaching them but at least whoever is will have some talent and experience.

Boom was not my favorite choice here it was Smart.  Anyhow after the hire, I myself was in hopes that Boom second shot would pay off with us the Gamecocks. App. St. is the kicker and broke the back and soured a lot of folks including me. but he does have a shot here by winning tonight and ending the season with a win over Clemson. Big big mountain. or if he loses a close one tonight and can beat Clemson in WB 2 weeks, either way, he will be back with a fair shot to turn it around with less pressure on him.  If he loses both likely to be back but under the raft of the fans and we will hurt with fan support unless he comes out of the gates fast next year. I have heard from others and just let the season pan out.  There is a lot going on.

This is what could possibly play out next season if Boom is still here.

Let's take a look at 2020. Boom if here with a new Offensive Coordinator a few other staff changes. Kind of funny  I am really going to say this. be 3-0 or even 4-0 before he heads into the meat of the schedule. Some ways 2020 will be a little easier than last year.

The biggest issue this year to me is the Oline.  In our losses, Our QBs have had no time to throw the ball and the run game has been slowed or stopped.  It’s the common theme in each of those games.

The schedule does look slightly easier next year but I don’t think 6-6 would save Muschamp job.  Maybe he can squeak out 7.   Frankly three of our losses this year came down to a single play.  We could easily be 7-3 right now and possibly 8-2.  Maybe it’s not as bad as it seems but it sure feels pretty bad.  A win tonight would help.

I agree the talent (and experience) will be there in two seasons...
Were not similar comments made 2 years ago? Isn't the recruiting about the same?

If nothing changes, why would anyone expect anything better than 4-5 wins in 2 years?

I am not worried about the talent level. Yeah, we lose Kinlaw, Wonnum, Smith and Brunson on D. But we now have Kier Thomas coming back for a RS Senior year, along with fellow Redshirts Devontae Davis and Brad Johnson, plus two 4* Freshmen in Anderson and Fitten. With others like Enagbare, Sandidge, Sterling and Pickens, we are VERY deep and talented on the D Line, Ernest Jones has passed Brunson as our best LB, and the secondary is very young. We will actually be more talented and deeper on D.

Same with the Offense. If Bentley returns, we will be very deep at QB. Edwards will be missed, but we have gone without the Smiths for much of the year and Leggett is becoming star, and Muse will be back at TE. The O Line is deep and only loses Stanely. Marshawn Lloyd will challenge returnees Fenwick and Harris at RB.

The issue is poor scheming, lack of in-game adjustments, and not motivating the team to play up to their talent level. When your opponent's game plan is to stop the run, and your OC calls two runs up the middle to start a drive, well....

The team takes on the personality of the coaching staff. Boom looks like a man waiting for the executioner, and his team plays like it. Compare it to the demeanor of Spurrier, who approached the Offensive playcalling like a riverboat gambler and showed his emotions on bad breaks or questionable penalties. Or Dabs, who could not be more of a cheerleader if he had pom poms.

A new OC might help with the playcalling and the offensive identity. But Boom needs to get his head out of his azz and start acting like a head coach - or he will not be one much longer.
So are you going to start your 1 month ban now, or wait until the Clemson game once it becomes 2 months?

Our offense is so inept someone has to go. I won’t lose sleep if our head coach is gone too.

It's only a shame if you love muschamp more than the football team. He's the same failure he was at Florida and for exactly the same reasons.

Requires coaching to become good players.
