1. Ok, circling back to our top choice. This seems optimistic, but no proof it isn't true and at least now I understand. Footnote: I think there is only one other defense on field coaching position left to fill beyond DC.1. I am sure that we started with "A" - but the "A" guy may not have said yes initially - he may have wanted to see what other options were out there, or might have wanted to stay put.
Use Torrian Gray as an example - he had a good job at UF, which would be seen as a step up from South Carolina. But a miserable bowl performance cost him his job - and even if he was not canned, Mullen's flirtation with the NFL may have caused him to jump ship.
I do not know if Gray is the "A" for DBs or not, but he has a strong resume and worked with Beamer at VT.
But the open hires seem to be more on the defensive side - which may be because Beamer wants the new DC to have a say in some of the assistants.
2. People from SC are more likely to have us a dream school - it is home to them, like with Stepp (and Beamer, to a lesser extent). Someone that grew up and played elsewhere would see us as a fallback and would be eager to go somewhere else. Boom was a UGA guy that coached for more successful programs - if he had been more successful, he would have jumped ship. Which may be why Tanner gave hem so much money when he had initial success - he had no loyalty to the state or the school.
3. Young and innovative (albeit with some solid experience) seems to be what Beamer is going after. A state connection just makes it better - do you have a problem with Stepp's caching qualifications? He wanted to come home - and will work even harder to be a success here in front of friends and family. If he screwed the pooch at Arky (and he did not far from it), most of the home folks would not be aware that he flopped.
Bottom line: If I worked at Clemson, I would mix a healthy dose of Da Rona virus in with their ostarine supplement. There are things that you do not do, no matter how much you get paid - and one is doing anything to help Clemson get ahead.
true. We'll need to actually get better for this to be sustainable, but SOS built a good base.Talent level and facilities actually improved under Muschamp - the last two years have hurt our reputation as a solid program, but Beamer can replace the negative vibe in a hurry.
Whenever a new coach shows initial improvement - and we will have more wins because we will play an easier schedule, and Muschamp recruited some solid players - it makes for great press and positive spin.
I just keep disappointing people today.Interesting discussion, fellas. If this was one of the big boards, it would have erupted into an ego-driven shitstorm of epic proportions.
https://www.wholehogsports.com/news/2021/jan/05/razorback-assistants-more-demand/After a period in which University of Arkansas assistant coaches were not in high demand the last few years, the trend has reversed this season under first-year Coach Sam Pittman.
New University of Texas Coach Steve Sarkisian is reportedly very interested in Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom, whose schemes drew praise this season, particularly after upset wins over Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports reported on Monday former South Carolina Coach Will Muschamp had turned down an offer to return to Texas as defensive coordinator and that Odom was on the “short list” for the Longhorns.
There is also a report from AL.com that LSU Coach Ed Orgeron is interested in Odom again for his vacant defensive coordinator’s position after making a run at Odom prior to last season.
In addition to the interest in Odom, strength and conditioning coach Jamil Walker is reportedly in the running for the same position at South Carolina. New Gamecocks Coach Shane Beamer has already hired three-year UA receivers coach Justin Stepp onto his staff back in Stepp’s hometown of Columbia, S.C.

Before I get too far into this, I think it’s important to mention that I have no confirmation of who LSU football‘s top three defensive coordinator candidates are at this point.
The only person that likely knows is Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron.
And that could change, depending on how interviews go (interviews for defensive coordinator are expected to begin midweek).
However, based on various reports, I think we have a good idea of who LSU’s top targets might be.
In no particular order, I think it’s Cincinnati Bearcats defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman, Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom and Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.

CBSSSports.com reports that Mississippi State defensive coordinator Zach Arnett is a candidate for the same position at Texas. A 34-year old, Arnett is considered a rising star in the coaching industry after only spending one season with the Bulldogs. Arnett played his college football at New Mexico and started his coaching career under defensive guru Rocky Long at San Diego State, where Arnett spent nine years before heading to Starkville.
Nothing official...they were hearing that Mason has a no compete clause in his contract for going to teams in the SEC East. Again it was what was being discussed on the radio. I have no way of verifying anything that was said.Is this new information and if so has it been confirmed by anyone else?
Sure. Clearly the only roadblock preventing Vandy from an SEC chip is Mason and his stolen Commodore playbook on the Gamecock sideline.Nothing official...they were hearing that Mason has a no compete clause in his contract for going to teams in the SEC East. Not arguing with you Blitz - but how can you be held to a contract after you have been fired? Does it have something to do with a payout, maybe? I have no idea, I'm just relaying what they were saying on 107.5 this morning. Not arguing with you Blitz - but how can you be held to a contract after you have been fired? Does it have something to do with a payout, maybe? Curious.
I’ve read this a bunch about crediting Muschamp for the facilities, but my question is if it wasn’t Muschamp years ago wouldn’t we still have gotten the facilities under whatever coach? How much was he directly involved with the facilities? I’ve concluded Muschamp was a crap hire and hopefully Beamer can get us back but it’s not going to be easy.Facilities are excellent. That's probably the main reason recruiting as been decent through the years.
Going to be a couple of years of good recruiting before we are worth a salted sh%# again - and that’s assuming those years are fruitful.7 minutes ago, TKE226 said:I’ve concluded Muschamp was a crap hire and hopefully Beamer can get us back but it’s not going to be easy.
I venture to say that Champ had little to do with the football ops building, etc. which came to fruition early on in his campaign after years of budgeting and planning. Maybe the coaches’ office carpeting/drapes.I’ve read this a bunch about crediting Muschamp for the facilities, but my question is if it wasn’t Muschamp years ago wouldn’t we still have gotten the facilities? Was my thinking as well. He gets the credit because he was the coach at the time but it was already in the works and credit would go to any coach. Too much credit is given the Muschamp for it. Champ was a bad hire and proved not to be a good fit. It is what it is. To this point, I would add a shout out to Eric Hyman, who got the athletic dept. financial house in order, and set forth v1 of the master plan. We were in the dark ages beforehand. When it comes to facilities the person to thank is Ray.
