On a brighter note, Jamil Walker is in Cola town today, possibly to interview for the S&C position.

Will Muschamp has turned down an opportunity to return to Texas as its defensive coordinator, sources told CBS Sports. Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom is among new coach Steve Sarkisian's top candidates now that Muschamp has passed on the position.

So Sark and Coach O both appear to want Barry Odom.

Could we be #3 on that list?

Called it.
Not sure not having all coaches in place today is directly related to him not coming immediately to South Carolina.  I would imagine he started working the phones as soon as he got the job.  Seems to be a case of Mason weighing his options more than anything.  I did not expect they would announce all today.

Kelly Bryant transferred to Mizzou because he felt he could trust Odom.

I also remember Odom saying that Kelly "told him some things" about Clemson but he never followed-up after Bryant's season was over.

If Odom is perceived as a coach who gets his players to perform because they feel he truly cares about them as human beings, that would dovetail with what Lattimore said about Shane.

Maybe Shane is going after Odom who is rightfully weighing his other options.

Or not.  The moon is cheese.  IDK

Columbia native Justin Stepp has joined the University of South Carolina football staff as the wide receivers coach, head coach Shane Beamer announced today.

Stepp, who was born in Columbia and graduated from nearby Pelion High School, has spent the past three seasons as the wide receivers coach at the University of Arkansas. During his time in Fayetteville, he had five players combine for six 400-yard seasons and 26 touchdowns. In 2020, sophomore Treylon Burks became the first Arkansas wide receiver to earn All-SEC recognition since 2015 after hauling in 51 catches for 820 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2019, Burks and Trey Knox were one of the top freshmen receiving tandems in the nation, combining for 57 catches and 860 yards, most among SEC freshman duos.

Off the field, Stepp was named as one of the nation's Top-25 recruiters by Rivals thanks to the addition of four four-star receivers. The Razorbacks were the only team in the nation to sign four four-star wide receivers in the 2019 class. In Stepp's four recruiting classes on the Hill, he's brought in seven 4-stars recruits. In addition, Stepp was selected to participate in the 2018 AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute, a prestigious program aimed at identifying and developing premier, future leaders in the football coaching profession. He was also named a finalist for the 2017 FootballScoop Wide Receivers Coach of the Year award.

"I'm happy to welcome Justin back home," said Coach Beamer. "He has accomplished so much as a recruiter and as a coach already in his career. I knew him before I got hired, but after numerous conversations with people across the country, it became clear he would be a fantastic addition to the staff."

"I'm honored to be part of Coach Beamer's staff at South Carolina," said Stepp. "Obviously, it's a chance for me to get back home. I grew up going to Gamecock games and it will be a dream come true to be able to coach on the sidelines at Williams-Brice Stadium alongside Coach Beamer."

You could be right. I didn't mean to imply that that part was confirmed, just that I called we weren't getting more coaches today announced at this BOR meeting.

Also for like the millionth time, there is a big difference in not moving to SC but starting the job full time and what CSB did. Every time I think that dead horse has been beat enough, some confuses the two. (not trying to pick on you. it is just a very important difference when discussing the topic and failing to recognize that difference has derailed just about every discussion of the topic.)

Agree. It means nothing. There is no specific time table, especially considering the season just ended for some coaches.

Shane is also raising the bar at the same time.

Good quality hires on the offensive side may get us a good DC hire once word spreads.

Not worries I don’t think you are picking on me.  I did mean not starting full-time here immediately.  I do not think that is impacting the coaches he is able to hire.  Most of that legwork would have been done by phone, not in person anyway.  Just my opinion.  I believe he was starting his tenure here with a message about commitment.  He is asking kids to commit to him and I think he realized we had some issues with the team and mentality and it was important to go to set the tone.  I don’t know how much if it really had to do with Oklahoma to be honest, but more about how he wanted the group he is going to be leading to perceive him as a coach and person.

I know that is the salespitch that he is pushing. I'm just not buying it, personally. To each their own.

I'm sure you see the irony here, no?

I think you missed the point, my friend. If the dead horse were beat enough, there would not be an endless need to explain the differences.

I will say this is another example of great messaging from CSB.

That is an excellent point. By setting up a good offensive staff, he may lure a more desirable DC. Who knows?

Any successful veteran DC, which we need most of all, knows they would be set up for failure if Shane doesn't shore up the offensive coaches first.

It's just like playing a game where the offense always goes 3-and-out.  Eventually the defense will become too tired and the team will lose.

Otherwise it's the same old same old.

In fact, some potential DC choices may even have told Shane that.
