Tomorrow when we go back out, I will probably be pondering that while sippin on some bourbon...I do a ton of science writing as part of my job, and it's the best part of my job (I'm a former journalist who now works in higher ed). I remember years ago, an astrophysicist I was interviewing told me a fun fact that left my mind 100% blown: scientists estimate that there are about 7.5 SEXTILLION grains of sand on the planet, spread across beaches from Cape Hatteras to Bali and back again. That's the number 7.5 with 17 ZEROES after it. OK, ready? He said that for every single one of those grains of sand, they estimate there are 10,000 stars.

It's hard to believe that we are the only life out there given those numbers; something to ponder the next time you are sitting on your towel watching the surf.
