What should our response be if Russia invades Ukraine?

...and will play perfectly into Putin's hand.
Give him the support he needs at home and he stays in power.
No, the mindset of letting him do what he wants out of fear of confrontation will do exactly that as well. We are damned if we do and damned if we don't.

Most of the free world appears to be pulling for Ukraine right now.

A law or treaty that is not enforced is simply a useless piece of paper that gets tossed into the trash can by people like Putin.

The world has had to deal with a lot of pain and suffering from Covid the past two years and now Putin is just adding to it.

The time for NATO to lay it's pecker on the table to see if it gets chopped off is drawing near.

Again, not trying to attack you. We just have different viewpoints and the points you raise are also valid as well.

More video.....Ruskies getting their azzes handed to them.

Picking off Russian tanks with US made Javelin ATMs. This is excellent asymmetrical warfare. The Russians apparently never heard of CAS.

But he's not doing what he wants.....his military is incompetent. Why are you convinced Putin is all that powerful?
He's proving to be a paper tiger. He may lose this war.

I hope you're right and that's all there is to it.

The next question would be, "But how long will it go on until he realizes he can't win?"

They may be incompetent but Putin doesn't really care about dead Russian soldiers. Keep in mind they lost 20 million people repelling the Germans. I don't see him quitting short of some kind of coup.

The Russians stole Ukraine's car and killed his effin' dog.

NATO is the useless Allstate guy who's killing the movie right now. Jeez, why did they put him in the movie?

I wanna see some Baba Yaga Rolling effin' Thunder right now.

No you just wanna see WWIII....
No, I wanna see peace in the Ukraine and an end to the human pain and suffering.

Reagan's 600-ship initiative was one of the things that broke the old Soviet Union because they just couldn't keep up and they were outgunned.

Organized-crime bosses run Russia now, which isn't quite the same thing as the experienced military leaders that threw back German Nazi invaders during WW2.

Peace through strength. NATO boots on the ground and air superiority is going to be the only thing that stops the Ukrainian conflict. Time is not a friend to the UAF right now because Putin has the numbers, fuel, and ammo in the long run.

"We're really prayin' for you guys" just won't get it done in the long run.

No he doesn't.
What are you basing that on?

# 1 Numbers - Russia is far superior to Ukraine in every aspect when it comes to numbers.

# 2 Fuel - Russia has an unlimited supply of oil.

# 3 Ammo - Russia has abundant sources of natural materials to make war munitions.

I have the first season DVD set of Nash Bridges that includes the "Javelin Catcher" episode.

Plot

An anti-tank weapon is stolen from Fort Pacifica and ends up in the hands of a succession of young criminals and hustlers. A gang member uses the big gun to literally blow away a rival. A group of would-be youthful robbers blow an armored car to smithereens - they fear the destructive potential of the weapon and dump the gun.

Nash and Captain Sandra McCormick track the anti-weapon to its true buyer, a wannabe gangster named Vincenzo Diamond. Meanwhile, Evan Cortez and Harvey Leek work another case of a series of male prostitute hate crimes. The two cases intersect when Diamond attempts to pick up transsexual prostitutes. With the help of Simone Dubois (played by RuPaul), a representative of Transsexual Sex Workers, Evan goes undercover in drag as a transexual hooker and arrests Diamond. Evan and Harvey unknowingly release Diamond before Nash gets to question Diamond. The weapon is picked up by a homeless man and sold to informant/hair salon owner Big Barry. Barry sells the weapon to Diamond. Diamond intends to use the gun to blow up the biggest gangster in San Francisco, Nick Vovokis, because Vovokis has slighted Diamond in the past. Nash intercedes and Diamond misses the yacht that Vovokis is cruising in.

Javelin catching...not an Olympic sport. LOL

One of my favorite shows back in day.

How many troops does he need to occupy all of Ukraine indefinitely?
How did Russia perform in their occupation of Afghanistan?
You're a history buff.....

Hard to say how many troops it would take to occupy the country. Probably at least 500,000. In warfare it has often been more difficult to hold territory than to take it.

They performed poorly in Afghanistan. They also performed poorly against the Germans in WWII as well as in Finland. Russian military doctrine seems to be mainly focused on bludgeoning an opponent with far superior numbers of troops and equipment without regard to their own casualties.

We were told in Advanced NCO School that the Russian military often has up to 10% casualties in peace time war games, mostly from accidents. That type of loss of life is totally unacceptable to any Western military force.

Another example of Russian bludgeoning tactics (and we're seeing this play out in Ukraine) is to devastate an area with artillery fire without regard to civilian life and or property.

On a military map a grid square is a thousand square meters. Our artillery doctrine is to put a direct hit on a target in a grid square on the third shot with the first 2 being used to adjust fire. The Russian doctrine is to saturate the grid square with hundreds of rounds and hope you hit the intended target.

Now we have an attack on US Consolate in Iraq and China talking Taiwan. I do think economic sanctions would hurt China much more than Russia. China is much more reliant on the west for their economy to function, but who knows. Seems like everyone is wanting to test us right now.

This seems more like what it's really about than Ukraine itself.

...and China talking Taiwan.
I hope they are noticing the great success the Russians are having with their little invasion & the economic boost to their economy. 😳
Add in their 100 mi boat ride across the Taiwan strait and it may be a disastrous adventure.

I could see the emerging disaster in Ukraine as more of a deterrent.

Good point about the hundred mile boat ride. The Germans couldn't even manage an English Channel crossing and it's (IIRC) about 22 miles. China would have to attack Taiwan by air before launching a seaborne invasion.

That of course would alert everything.
