What should our response be if Russia invades Ukraine?

Ukraine being able to capture so much Russian land will eventually affect the entire conflict. And Russia has pulled some troops from Ukraine to go try and get it back, but they are not having much success yet.
Ukraine attacking arms depots deep in Russia will affect the conflict too.
When we attacked Iraq in the Gulf war, they had the absolute best weapons Russia had made. We had no problem destroying Iraq's military then. They had the best MIGs and the best Tanks they had bought from Russia.
Today, I do not think Russia's weapons are all that much better. If they are, why is Ukraine still in it. Using all the modern weapons Ukraine has been getting, they may actually start driving Russia back out. Russia just had time to build such tough defenses, it is not going to happen quick. And apparently, Russia does not care about losing so many troops. They just keep sending untrained boys into battle.
I don't think they had the best Russian weapons anymore than Ukraine has our best or any other country that thinks they have our best... in fact I know they don't have Russians best because they don't have Nukes or subs or... anyway good story. Don't underestimate your enemy, if that is our enemy your statement is niave at best...

That wasn't my experience at all. I spent 24 years in the Army and the only troops we disparaged were Russian troops in Bosnia.

We worked closely with UK, French, Canadian and Dutch forces in Bosnia and had nothing but respect for all of them as they were very competent and professional.

I was involved in 2 UN operations and 2 REFORGER exercises.
I don't disagree with your statement at all when soldiers were in front of each other and not behind closed doors... I spent a good part of my career as a Camp Boss and Civilian Mayor or O&M Manager for NATO/American bases across theatre as well as working high level contracts with high level military personnel and they all talked shit, mad shit about, with respect sometimes and disdain others about incoming or outgoing personnel differences in opinion or ways of doing things or the who, what, when, where and how! Sometimes this happened in private and sometimes in high level meetings, in the ranks it would happen as well because that is usually when it happened in high level meetings! I could fill a book with stories of US, Australia and UK soldiers telling me how useless Iraq and Afgahnistan soldiers they were trying to train were...

Looks like Putin's strategy will work out for him. Grind it out until the US election with the hopes that a change in administration will weaken the west's support for Ukraine.

Based on Trumps' position and stance on Ukraine and NATO during his first term. I could be wrong.

But I do think that's what Putin was counting on.

“The message is, if you want a deal, you’re going to crawl on your knees for it,” says Nina Khrushcheva, an authority on Russian politics and foreign affairs at the New School. “Putin feels he is starting out with Trump from a position of strength.”

That makes the Russian president an outlier among European leaders. On Wednesday, many of them issued flattering statements and promises to cooperate with the Trump administration. But the Kremlin noted drily that the U.S. and Russia remain at war, “both directly and indirectly," while Putin’s conditions for ending that war, his spokesman said, “remain unchanged, and are well known in Washington.”

This ain't 2019. Putin is all in.

I think that at least we will talk to Putin now which has not been done. We will never have a resolution if conversations do not take place. I will choose to wait and see how it plays out. I don't know that Trump will do better, but what we were doing was not working.

Europe needs to step up. This is not our war. I don't have a problem helping Ukraine to a point but Europe needs to be carrying the lion's share of support.
Same, but we also don't want intact F-16s and superior Leopard tanks easily falling into Russian hands, either. Pretty sticky in some ways.

There are always back channel discussions. But directly trying to broker some kind of deal when neither side is ready is misplaced. There's also multiple other parties at this table with lots at stake for their futures.

Of course we could just do an end-around all our allies and try to give the Russians what they want. 😬

Or we could threaten to withhold weapons and aide to Ukraine unless Zelinsky fabricates some stories about Hunter Biden.

I don’t think any fabrication is necessary at this point. lol. It seems pretty straightforward. I think his dad was the one to withhold money unless a prosecutor was fired, but whatever.

I'm guessing we are going to ensure our European allies can buy Natural Gas from us and stop buying from Russia, same with oil and really squeeze his economy...Now that we have a stable oil market with competition...
