Evaluating Muschamp tenure at the helm so far

Aiken, we have a much different team than the last year of Fat Bradstard's regime, both in terms of talent and coaching.

Spork, Pickens is a true Freshman being worked in as he learns the system, and he plays behind two Seniors that are playing well. He is at a position where you do not get a lot of stats - a DT is supposed to occupy tacklers and provide push at the point of attack. If he does that, plus gets some tackles and the occasional TFL or sack, then you have yourself a really talented DT.

FYI, he was involved in the 4th and goal stop against Mizzou.
You could be right but it sounds like a scheme issue to me. If we are so talented on the d line, they need to make some noise.

Spork means well and brings a more critical view, which is good for debate. And he is a ray of sunshine compared to some from the old CockyTalk (cough, IronFan, cough).

What we have with UVA, UNC and now Mizzou is poor QB play. We had the same coaches on Offense - OC, QB coach - as for the Clemson, CSU and Alabama games, when we had good QB play and a strong Offense.

So the question is....are we getting out-coached in our losses or are our QBs getting outplayed? Sure, the O Line could have blocked better, the WRs could have done a better job of getting open, maybe we should have run more, we could have called better plays. But there were plenty of open throws that were missed in the three bad losses, just like they were hit in the three good offensive games.

And here is the deal. If you hit passes, it keeps drives alive, opens up the playbook, gives more room for runs. If the Offense is moving the ball, the Defense gets to stay on the sideline and rest, plus there are fewer possessions/chances to score.

Are we getting out-coached or do we simply need better/more consistent QB play? The answer determines whether we need to make changes or keep the status quo and allow Hilinski and Joyner (and Doty next year) to solve the QB issues as they get the needed experience.
Thanks for the kindish words. We certainly are different sides of the coin but both good fans imo.

We can (and do) disagree but still respect each other's point of view.

I liked the Muschamp hire and believe that he has done a lot of positive things that bode well for the future. But at some point, you need to show progress on the field. That means that you need to coach up to the level of talent on the team (at least) abd start beating teams that are similar or lesser in talent. That needs to start happening soon. Real soon. Or even the pumpers (like me) will jump off the bandwagon.

I am pulling for Boom.
hopefully we are all pulling for boom. I also don't think he's screwed everything up. He's in fact done plenty of good. Just the red flags at florida are starting to crop up here and I'm not going to accept a coach losing to mediocre teams. No gamecock fan really ever should. (also of course we disagree and I at least respect your POV even when i find it insufferably positive, ha)

Have to say that everyone treated each other with respect on their feelings about Boom in this thread. Man I would love to see him turn this thing around Starting Saturday. Get away from this parallel thing that happen to him with Florida and looking like it is creeping in here now.  The dip. I wanted some one else 4 years ago to be the coach. but who knows how any of them would have worked out here. We got Boom I am in his corner. I want us and him to win, I do see the problems the program is having and they need to be fixed. We are in a pickle right now. Major problem besides some coaching problem and personal is the geographic area we are in with recruiting right now. The worse we really have ever been in. I will explain. We are really cut off the only area that is open is the east their lies the Atlantic ocean. Cannot recruit there.  In our State we have Clemson playing for National titles below Georgia playing for the same-thing West, Alabama again same situation. OK go up to North Carolina you have Mack Brown with N.C St. locking down there state. We have very very little wiggle room. Going to take two things something very very special to happen or do what the others are doing and get away with it. GO COCKS!!

We owe Kentucky a merciless beat down where we unleash all of our anger and frustration from losing to them the last 5 years into a slaughtering Saturday night.

Now, can the team (and coaches) deliver? I sure as hell hope so.

Everyone knows my take on this. I have always made it known that Muschamp was a terrible hire.

Looking more and more that way. Coach I wanted now at Texas. If we would have landed him would only be for a year. His dream job opened up the next year. The Sooner OC very very young. but he has really fared well being the head coach at Oklahoma.  That was my No. 1 and 2. But anyhow it is what it is.

Wait, you didn't get that joke? SMDH. Oh dear.  Ok I'm done here.
First off,  you did not mean anything you said as a joke!!!  But that's OK.  You started off by just "wanting to fire Coach Muschamp" without really giving a good reason why - other than to just fire him because we lost a game or two we should have won.  You have not been a Gamecock Fan for long as you would certainly know that we have these type of seasons and firing the Head Coach without giving your reasons why makes you all the more the "Fool In This Game Of Opinion" as you do play it well!!!

I certainly gave you my opinion of "what USC should do if we don't get any better in the next two years as we (USC) cannot afford a buyout at this time.  If we can, please explain to everyone how we can do this as you are so full of rhetoric to fire Coach Muschamp.  I fully understand your reasons for complaining to a certain extent, but when you start calling for "firing"  the Head Football Coach without a justifiable means or explanation - then you are just a "one-sided- opinion" which really you means you are just "full of hate for Coach Muschamp or just a negative nancy for anything he or his staff does"???  I hope this post meets your grammar guidelines - since you are the "Speech Gestapo"!!!!

I saw this post and it was like the stormclouds dissipated and the sun came out! Welcome, IF!I

I am a lot closer to your way of thinking than I was preseason. I am still hoping that a few games will fall our way and Boom will get it turned around, but the window of oppprtunity is closing rapidly.
and just a few posts up you were talking s***?  What you call negativity, I call realism.

UK's Quarterback is injured and was injured for yesterday's game against us. So, that same logic you use for us losing to Mizzu because #3 was injured you could use for last nights game.  Look we are going to lose to UGA big, We will see if Florida is for real next weekend,  UcheaT and Vandy should be wins, App state is a toss up in my mind (should win),  TA&M is going to be a close loss ( play at their house), and Clempson will beat us again. We finish at 4,5,or 6 wins, Most likely 5 which is 1 less tan I thought as UNC was a real kick to the balls, and Muschamp should be on the hot seat just for that game alone. 6 wins and a bowl is still possible, but this season is already a huge disappointment.

IF, I was with you in expecting a win against UNC and thought that we should have played better against Mizzou and won that also. I believed that we had a much better team than we were showing and were under-achieving heading into the UK game.

But here is the thing. Teams can (and do) improve over the course of the season. And bad losses can demoralize - or motivate - a team.

If the talent level is where I think it is, and the players/coaches take the slow start as motivation, we can accomplish some things over the rest of the seson. We have already ended the UK streak, and did it easily - depite the Offense not really clicking.

TAMU is looking a little mundane right now, and I have been on record as saying that UF is over-rated.

And there is another over-rated team - Clemson. Their Defense is not nearly as good as last year (not that we had much of an issue with their D even then) and their Offense is much less explosive, for whatever reason. And we actually have a Defense to put on the field, barring a spate of injuries like last year. Who is to say that we can't end that five year losing streak in Willy B, just like we did with UK?

Bottom line, we can still accomplish a lot this year. And winning some games will help us close out another strong recruiting class. That would position us to get back to where we were under Spurrier, starting in 2020.

But - we do need to win some more big games.
I guess the best here to do is one game at a time. Save judgment till the end of the season. Ryan seems to still have a little elbow issue, Ryan looked good his first two starts. Then the elbow issue the next two. Bye week rest up and be ready to battle the Bulldogs in Athens. 2-3 now, arguable should or could have been 3-2 or 4-1. Let's see how it plays out. After watching the other teams on the schedule yesterday, Feel the gamecocks have a real shot for 4  more wins 6-6 and bowl eligible.

Yeah, bye week is huge. Not only can Ryan get back to 100% (hopefully), but Dak will have time to heal and give us a dangerous weapon - a WR with moves, a quality back-up at QB AND a change of pace guy.

If Rico (ave not heard anything yet) and Dylan can heal up as well, then the Offense will be able to step it up a notch.
Anyone know cwm's record coming off of a bye?

Does it matter?  You’ve seen Georgia play right?  We beat Kentucky who’s playing with a QB that couldn’t start for several of our local HS teams and that makes you want to take a closer look at a game we will be 20+ pt underdogs at their place?  Sorry Georgia is a big loss.

Happy with the defense.  Glad to see UNC gave fits to Clemson too.  But really concerned about our offense last two weeks and especially against Kentucky that doesn’t rank in the top 75 defensively.  I’m glad our running game look good but it’s not like Kentucky was keeping the ball from us. I mean how many three and outs did they have, we had chance after chance after chance and couldn’t score.  Our pass protection sucks and it’s going to be a major problem moving forward.

Sorry just had to call this comment out.  Ask Clemson about this one. Also Miami (who almost beat Florida).

UNCs offensive line is massive and they have an excellent defensive coordinator.  Their QB is legit too.  Not a bad loss, but one we should’ve won.  Their bigs mauled us in the 4th qtr.

Btw- its time to officially worry about App State.
