Evaluating Muschamp tenure at the helm so far

I was very worried when we hired Muschamp because I thought if he couldn't get it done at UF with that wealth of talent in their recruiting base, how the hell could he do it at SC. But, I liked his energy and the emphasis on recruiting, something his predecessor lacked. Now, a few years in, I think Muschamp's coordinators are letting him down. They're strong recruiters and who can connect with athletes and parents, but I don't think their coaching is up to par.

Our players are just not well prepared. In fact, we seem completely inept in some situations. Since Muschamp arrived on campus, our defensive backfield in particular has looked lost a lot of the time, which is one of the great ironies of his tenure.  Fundamentals are just not there on defense. They seemed to emphasize stripping the ball and getting turnovers, but it's not really happening. Maybe tackling should be a greater focus. Blocking is suspect on offense and play-calling during the game is bewildering. I sound like the typical internet coach, I realize.

My gut tells me Muschamp is here at least two more seasons regardless, but it wouldn't shock me if TRob got himself a head coaching job somewhere after this season. That replacement hire could be the key to Muschamp's fate here.

This supports my theory that he's a pretty good recruiter but not a great coach.  He couldn't win with his own players, but then McElwain came in and did.  Muschamp needs to be a DC and head recruiter but we need a different coach.

He's a decent recruiter but needs to be elite to show marked improvement here.  Big issue is the orange team who is to a point cherry picking the state because their footprint is so large now.  Sure there are the occasional wins for us in state head to head but that's rare and tough to overcome.  UGA is obviously trending up as is UNC, to a point.  It's getting tougher in the southeast than it was a few years ago and that makes the climb steeper for Champ.  I will contend that in a small state, a school with little to no positive history, we need somewhat of a gimmick at HC, if not at OC for sure.  Champ could be the right HC, but he needs someone at OC who draws players in with offensive style, play, big play ability and stats.  Just lining up and trying any conventional or even RPO isn't working here to attract talent.  The defense is mediocre but good enough for us to be a consistent 8 win program.  With a better attack there is enough talent on this team now to outscore most of our opponents.  Where would we be without B Edwards?  We will find out next year....

Without B Edwards we'd still be 1-3, so not much different really.

Needs to get over the (mental?) hump and learn how to win big games. Idk what it is going to take but it has to change. We also need to recruit better and our defense needs a facelift. I thought he would be able to recruit and coach the defense much better than what we’ve been shown so far.
I'd settle for him getting over the hump of beating mediocre teams, tbh

The way I see it is somebody in the head shed needs to grow a set, sit Muschamp down, and take the reigns from him like was allegedly done to Dabo a while back. Make him a figurehead who has no hand in any of the practices or play calling. Make him a glorified cheerleader and head recruiter while damn good coordinators take over practices,  development, and play calling.

...until the results on the field prove it, that may just be urban legend.

Stars matter....winning matters much more.
the old saying he could sale Ice to an Eskimo. Problem here is he has no ICE to sale on himself.

That would be his ICE.

Get spurrier on the line!

Problem is we don't have any good coordinators.  Maybe it would work if he focused on the defense and fixed that.

Ihave not lost the faith and still have a wait and see attitude - beating UK would be a huge step, since even Spurrier was unable to do that towards the end - but we need positives, now. The Hilinski from the Alabama and CSU games would have been enough to beat Mizzou and will be enough to beat UK - if we can get him back.

Spork, the reason that I say an offensive-minded coach is that (like gamecock88 says) they tend to bring more excitement to the program and attract talented skill position players that want to be in a productive system. Clemson's success started when they got the Chad and began getting good QBs and WRs to play in his system. And it seems that - at least recently - they have become better Head Coaches, Tom Herman being the latest examlpe.
Completely not saying your wrong in your preference of new coach. Just saying if a defensive mind can win us games, I'd like a defensive mind. If an offensive mind can do it, I want them. If champ can do it, I want him. We are looking at 1-5 if we don't beat kentucky (assuming that we can't pull a crazy upset against UGA), so there is a lot riding on this weekend.

I would also argue we need better OL and DL.  When we beat the taters 5 years in a row, we beat them on the line of scrimmage those years.

Slightly OT, but when the time comes to make a hire at HC, I kinda hope we give Mike Houston a look.

I am really pulling for Coach Muschamp to be successful. I don't want to see him fired, or anyone else on the staff, but I understand that it all boils down to winning. Unless this team can improve and win 3 or 4 more games this year, I think some changes are going to happen. My question is this...If Muschamp remains as our coach, he probably needs to make a change with the OC or DC, maybe both. Who would be some names that would be a great hire?

Love to get one of the Coordinators from tater land. Dam did I just say that. Anyhow that will not happen. Just hope if because I say if because as of now no one I say no one has lost their job and might not. I just say this, from Tanner to Trustees to Coaches all need to get their act together before anything can be done construct-fully. Can't build you house in a sandbox. We need a solid foundation first.

After the Bama game I checked out the Tide fan boards.  They were pretty much saying S.C. would do some damage this year and that it’s clear Muschamp had upgraded the talent.

I still think it’s too early.  I think we got out coached by UNC but would’ve still won easily had Bentley not had the worse game of his career.  I think Missouri has a top 10 defense and we had an injured freshman QB.   Remember we handed them 14pts.  We’ve also seen what this team is capable of offensively which can be very good.

I think we will beat Kentucky pretty well and give GA a tough game.  It wouldn’t surprise me if what Bama fans said turns out to be true and we salvage the rest of the season, although it’s too late to have a good season, but maybe on Ok season.

Good news here if you are correct. Pray you are. Gamecocks win starting Saturday that would be a start to proving what you just said.. I think we all can agree that the team is really healthy and no excuses come Saturday if they should lose. Think that is fair?

I always disagree with the post "we handed the other team xx points and so we lost" A good team doesnt hand any points. A great team gets points and bad teams gives points. If we were a good team mistakes that lead to points would not happen. Small sample size but this is what we have so far

UNC: outcoached. Loss

Char So: inferior team, nothing learned Win

Bama: I thought we looked good, given the opponent.  But still a loss.

Missouri: outcoached again, Loss

If we lose to UK in similar fashion, is is fair to say Muschamp and Co arent good coaches? Or will UK be Muschamp's "signature" win?
