Evaluating Muschamp tenure at the helm so far

I don't know man. I'd take the eleven win seasons and five straight against Clemson in exchange for one 3 win season.
Fair enough, the point was one win does not make a coach. Muschamp has not yet proven that he is a coach that can win the state, let alone the east, or the division.

I gotcha. People like simple good news. Reality is messy. There was good and idiotic coaching in that game

Boom has in fact already proven he could win the state AND already won the SEC Eastern Division Championship...only that state was Florida and he won the SEC Eastern Division while there in his second year.

But you're right, he did inherit a terrible 3-9 team  and a program on the decline who's coach walked away in the middle of the season with little promise during the exact same period of time that Clemson had become the  single best program in the country winning two out of three National Titles and appearing in three of the last four title games...yet you somehow believe this shows Boom has not proven he can even win the state...with a radically inferior team  for the first three years so far.

This right after he just got his team to beat #3 UGA in their house between the hedges on national TV....possibly the single biggest road upset in the program's history.

My issue is with the play calling games like the UF game, and Mizzou, and other bone head mistakes like UNC. Not the players

He's also proven that he can tank a program loaded with top recruits after winning the SEC-E.

He now has to prove that he really has learned from his mistakes like he claimed he did when he was hired here.

It's trending up, but we are 2 games removed from a 1-3 start.

I always felt like Florida cut him loose too soon.  He had a lot to clean up there.  Given another year or two I think he would’ve had Florida back to winning big.

It is clear that a lot of people have no idea why Boom was brought in or why...out of nowhere...Urban Meyer suddenly decided he didn't want to coach football anymore...until he did again.

Florida was as dirty and crime ridden as any program EVER.

Evaluate Muschamp:

Before this season started: Had better record that Spurrier right? Through 3 years? Most wins in 3 years as SC head coach? Known as a great recruiter. But for me there was always a lingering doubt about his ability to win big games.

After going 1-3: Many many doubts about his ability to coach.

After 2 wins in a row: Ok, so maybe he can coach. Though I still saw some bonehead play calling. Though I fully admit Spurrier teams had situations with bonehead play calls too. These wins help remove some doubt but I still have questions about his ability to create and sustain a good program. Because he hasn't proven himself, there is the doubt. When we had Spurrier, knowing what he had done gave many hope. That's probably the biggest difference.

We aren't 1-5 or 2-4, so definitely trending upward. I don't think App St will be a pushover, but we should win. Vandy should be a W and UT we should win too, but who knows. A big question mark to me is the health of Hilinski. Not sure he plays all remaining games this year.

Yes, the playcalling in the Mizzou game was terrible. Especially the call for Hilinski to catch his own batted pass and then fumble it for a Mizzou TD. And the call for the Pick Six. And the call for all of the off-target passes.

And the UF game......terrible offensive playcalling, even though we somehow got a nice lead and scored 31 points, on the road, against a team that wound up #7 in the country. The playcalling on Defense was even worse - the fact that we had about half of our key defenders out with injuries, then lost several more during the game so that we were literally "defense-less", was totally irrelevant.

You are right, it is all on the coaches and bad playcalling, zero on the players.
Pump all the sunshine you like, I prefer to be realistic. He hasn't proven that he can win and win consistently.  I am all for giving him a few more years, but I we need to see major improvements in the offense, I would think maybe a new OC would prove that he is willing to do what it takes to win and win consistently.

Not pumping sunshine at all. I am just pointing out the obvious - the game is played by young men that start off lacking experience, that often get hurt, play hurt, and make mistakes.

Coaches can put in briliant gameplans that don't work because of the talent (or lack thereof)/inexperience/lack of healthy bodies to execute. Or maybe it is just a case of a key player - QB being the most important position - having a bad day.

I get it. Boom was supposed to recruit a bunch of talent and build a team that could challenge the heavyweights on the schedule. He gets somewhat of a pass for the first years, and it is time for the results to show on the field. Beating UK for the first time in six years was a good start, winning against a more talented UGA team is another major step.

The gameplan did not matter for the Defense at the end of last year - we did not have the players to execute it. We do now, and we are finally seeing a true Boom Defense. The gameplan does not matter for the Offense if the QB does not get the ball to his receivers - but I believe that Hilinski can do that, if he can stay healthy.
How do you explain UNC and Mizzou? Even against UGA the offense went from OK to downright bad. IMO, they need to make a change, but I'm sure some people are happy just accepting mediocrity and are scared of change.

I feel like a broken record, but QB play has a huge impact on the play of the Offense. And - because an anemic Offense leads to short possessions - it also impacts the Defense. The D gets no rest, there are more possessions that have to be defended, etc.

Hilinski had a bad game against Mizzou. 13 for 30 passing, and he gave Mizzou two TDs - matching the total for our Offense. He had wide open receivers that he missed badly.

The word was that he was hurt, missed practices, and you could tell that something was wrong. But somehow, you interpret our bad offense as "poor playcalling" and not a bad game from Hilinski.

The UNC game was more of the same. Bentley threw for 142 yards, 16-30, 1 TD, 2 INTs, and 4.7 YPA. The UNC QB - a true Freshman - had 245 yards, 15-24, 2 TDs, 10.2 YPA. We win the game - easily - if Bentley does not have a sub-par game, or at least come close to Howell's numbers. Not on the playcalling - as bad as it was, we still win if Bentley does not airmail a wide open Shi Smith. Was that a a bad play call - or a bad throw?
Yup. All is well.

the offense hasnt been good this year, but it was very good last year in the stats and efficiency rankings until it imploded those last 6 quarters.  mostly though i look at it as we're only 6 games in and theres a whole lot of season left to decide if we need to make any changes in the offseason because we're not going to make any during the season.  the positive trending forward is we havent turned the ball over in 2 weeks and it might be looked at as baby steps to some but the offense hasnt put the defense in a bad position the past 2 weeks.

the offense didnt score in regulation after hilinski left the game but there were some positives beyond just not turning it over that gave us a good chance to win the game in regulation.   converting a 3rd and 15, only one 3 and out during dak's 4 regulation drives, driving from our 25 to inside the uga 40 with a chance to go for it or kick the winning field goal.  big throw for a 1st down to open up that drive and the ball to dawkins was almost hauled in despite the pass interference.  we clean up these procedure penalties that had the offense playing from behind too often and i have faith this offense will help us win games.

The quality of opponents (and their Defenses) and having two WTF games with our QBs has a lot to do with the performance of the Offense. We should be fine if Hilinski can finish the season and/or Dak gets more comfortable - we have the rest of the pieces (O Line, RBs, talented receivers). We will know a lot more about the future of the Offense after UF.

Couple of points. We had a good chance of landing Bentley regardless of Bobby getting the job - Jake grew up in the state and Clemson was not pursuing him. Dak was a top 300 player and could have gone just about anywhere as a QB - other schools are not going to pursue him hard if the in-state school is going after him. NC State was an exception because Dak's OC in HS was Ian Rafferty, a former NC State star (briefly in the NFL). The fact that he was pushing his alma mater to go after Dak says a lot, and Dak was willing to consider him due to his OC. And Russell Wilson being and NFL DT QB is pretty persuasive as well.
Jake sure seemed to heavily favor whoever would give his dad the best job. Wasn't auburn leading before papa bentley came here. pretty sure dak only got offered as an athlete at clemson as well. gotta give props to champ for getting RH without reservation imo. If coaches weren't responsible for the performance of their players (including qbs), they wouldn't get paid what they do and probably wouldn't exist. for the same reasons, you have to give champ credit for the amazing defense the last two games, you also have to give him credit for the times that Jake has struggled.

I legitimately don't know if I pity or envy your ability to only see the most optimistic interpretation of events. The truth probably lies in the average of you and iron. that said if we keep RH healthy I think we go bowling which is all I think was reasonable to hope for from the team this year.

Please show me what I previously posted that was "crap".
I would suggest you start by reading your own posts, it might just give you a clue of what I’m talking about.

But even if you did, it still wouldn’t sink in.

Carry on.
