Evaluating Muschamp tenure at the helm so far

It takes 6-7 years minimum to build a program.  The 1st 2 recruiting cycles are a crap shoot with taking any good players you can get.  The next 4 years are when you get the players you actually want.  They start becoming seniors in year 6 and that’s when you know what kind of coach you have.

Sadly, most flailing programs don’t have that kind of patience.  And so they continue firing coaches after year 4 and then start the process all over again.  10 years go by and the program still sucks going on their 3rd coach in as many years (hello Tennessee)  If they would only wait till year 6 they might find their patience pays off (hello Kentucky).

Fans and boosters are a programs worst enemy.  I like an AD that can stand up to the pressure and put his job on the line.  It’s not hard to tell if a coach is going to make it after 4 years and it has nothing to do with wins and losses.  It’s 3 simple things: recruiting rankings/success, player retention and lastly QBs on roster.

Starting with QBs on roster, that means you have a coach that can get winning QBs on campus.  The most successful coaches do it consistently.  It’s the most important position and it’s why some really good coaches fail.  Next is recruiting rankings and hits and misses.  Top 25 recruiting classes for Power Five conferences is a must, and they gotta pan out.  If you recruit top 25 and then kids cant qualify or they turnout to be duds then it’s no good.  Great programs evaluate well and have a high percentage of “hits”.  Lastly is player retention.  How many players of that top 25 class make it to seniors?  That’s a critical factor in determining success and builds depth and experience.  If you look at the top programs they have these things in place

In my opinion Muschamp checks all of those boxes.  I love our young QB talent and incoming QB talent.  I love his 3rd and 4th recruiting classes with NFL talent on the field (only freshmen and sophomores now).  And I think he is getting a lot of “hits” on good quality guys who will stick around 4 years.  I look at all of the teams around the country with troubled players dealing with suspensions all the time. We hardly have any of that now.

Of course we are struggling in 2019 with the nations hardest schedule and with a group of seniors and juniors that made up his initial patchwork recruiting classes.  But I like what I see with the young players and I love the 2020 class coming up.   I’m all in on Muschamp through 2022 because that’s when it should come together.  This is based on what I believe are the critical components of success and what I am seeing from Muschamp thus far in an objective, non-emotional way.  If we have patience I think it will work out, but fire him too soon then I’m afraid we will become Tennessee.

I am sick to my stomach by the loss today, but your words are words of wisdom for our program.  As upset as I get at a loss to a team that I thought might be a win, I still think that Coach Muschamp and Ray Tanner have this ship headed in the right direction.  If we fire Coach Muschamp, we would become the next Tenn or worst and who in his right mind would want to come here and coach with a fan base that expects miracles in four years or less?  This is not going to be a easy task, but I think we are slowly getting there.

Sorry guys but can someone please tell me what Muschamp has done? We can’t beat UK. What is a good win under him? Missouri was not good yesterday and we looked even worse. We win 4 games this year. If this isn’t his year, next year certainly should be.

It’s hard to watch this year. But I agree with you 100%. During a coach every 4 years we end up like Tennessee.

So some of ya'll want to keep Will Muschamp 3 more years so he can set records for the most stupid losses in the history of Gamecock football?

Seems we have a choice: Be the next UTen or the next Vandy....or maybe both.

I'd say you are right.

To scrap it now would be our doom!

I'm what universe is expecting a team that can compete with Missouri and Kentucky expecting miracles. A programs worst enemies are low expectations and tolerance of continual failure.

No one can tell you that. Scary thing is he's doing worse with his players than with the "bare cabinet" he was left.

The biggest problem is we can’t beat mediocre teams. Don’t give me this “tough schedule” crap. We can’t beat UNC, UVA, Missouri, etc.  blowing leads like we have done vs Florida last year and UNC this year... this shit just gets exhausting and at the end of the day Muschamp is accountable as this is his team. He doesn’t know how to win.. period! The fans, program, University all deserve better than this.

Please explain how we are headed in the right direction when we have beat one ranked team in the past three years and cannot beat mediocre teams.

I am afraid that those that want 3 more years are going to get exactly that.  With his buyout structured like it is, he will get at least 3 more regardless of the win loss record.  Strap in for some more disappointing seasons boys.

We aren’t.   This team has no direction and the program has flatlined.   A better offensive mind could take the players we have and consistently score enough to win most games like yesterday.   Not this group of coaches.  We wont compete with the likes of Bama, UGA and Clemson.  The rest we could compete with the right offensive game plan and not just a collection of random, predictable, tired plays.  A better coach would adapt in game and adjust.   These guys never do.

Another flat performance from a Muschamp coached team on the road, seems to be a trend. As for oc talk, Hilinski was clearly off in first half. Not sure if it was first rd start or elbow but plays were there he just missed them. The 2 rookie mistakes he made were huge, you have to throw that ball out of the endzone and get 3 points on that pick 6

They can't be disappointing if we expect muschamp to continue being the head coach he's always been. We'll get there 3-6 win seasons that we should expect. It'll suck but it's predictable.

It was his elbow. You think that quiet ass Missouri crowd affected him?? The first TD Missouri scored was an absolute garbage  call. The pick 6 from end zone was a bad decision by Ryan.

I totally get everyone's disappointment in not winning games.  It is very easy to bitch and moan about our football program.  But like Mr. Ed stated, we still are one or two years away from getting to a very competitive place in the SEC.  If you have a winning formula for "immediate success", then I and everyone else here would love to hear it as all I hear is "fire Coach Muschamp or Coach Muschamp can't coach"!  Who would you bring in and how long would you give this new coach before you once again "launch a fire the coach post"?  Give it another day or two and it won't be as bad as you see it now and maybe you will then see that Coach Muschamp is doing the best he can do at this part of the season.  In a couple of years if things are not better,  then USC should take a long and hard look at our program and what to do then to fix our problems - if things don't get better.  This season or next is not that time.

When the vast majority of players on the roster have been recruited by the current coach, it is time to critically evaluate that coach. Each of our last two coaches had more success (wins against quality teams) than our current coach. To suggest that holding CWM to the same standard is equivalent to "bitch and moan", is detrimental to our program. Further accepting losing to bad teams does more hard to the program that any firing would.

Champ was our third choice for our last hire (if you're being generous). He's coached like that was an accurate appraisal of his ability.

6 seasons is far far too long of a leash for someone you didn't really want to begin with.

We are playing a true freshman at QB, along with a lot of sophomores and red-shirt freshmen.  The SEC East/West has also gotten a lot better in the last 5 years.  Coach Muschamp has come in and recruited some very good players and is really into his 3 - 1/2 year with recruiting as he was late getting hired here at first.  As I explained earlier, what would you have USC do to fix the problem right now???  I hate losing also, but we are in a lot better position now than when Coach Muschamp took over.  Constant changing/firing of coaches is not the way to go.  I would really love to hear your plan to make it happen now???  It is so easy to complain from your recliner or chair after a bad loss, but please enlighten us all to how you would fix these problems with our football team and turn us into a Super Power over night or maybe in one year???

I don't agree with everything that Coach Muschamp and his staff does, but I do have enough football sense to know that I and many here on this board could not do 1/10th as good.  Let's allow Coach Muschamp and his staff to hopefully get this program turned around and start winning a lot more.

Once again, you are just showing or stating your frustrations as a fan and that's your right, but you offer no clue or pathway to the stars to fix what Coach Muschamp and his staff are trying to do now?  Yes, he might have been our 3rd choice as Herman did nothing but tease us.  Kirby cannot be blamed for wanting to go to GA.  Who would you hire now after you fired this staff?  I just think that he needs 6 years to fix this program or guide it to a higher level.  You want him gone now or you want to complain about losing (which is your right), but please offer to all of us that think 6 years is the right way to go and tell us your master design so that we can fix this program faster?  I am sure that Ray Tanner would love to hear it along with many other programs that are in the same or worst state than our program is now.
