Shane's staff: Let's fill in the blanks as we go

Duce is in the mix for an NFL HC job - he's not coming back here to coach RBs. As a lifelong Eagles fan, I would love for him to get the Eagles job and see what he could do - but coming back here to coach RBs would be like 2-3 steps backward. His first step in coming back here would be a HC at a non P5 job and then maybe here?

I'm pretty sure we'd take him if he had NFL HC job experience as well, but completely agree with your overall point.

Wasn't there some issue about him not having a degree or some kind of academic qualification to be on SC's coaching staff?  I seem to remember something from back in the early Spurrier days when talk was circulating about him joining the staff.

Or, I could simply be way off base on this one.

Ringing a bell for me too, although I can't remember specifics.

Ok, this is what I found in an old Travis Haney blog (apologies for the length):

Duce vents about USC, HymanPosted by travis_haney at 3/23/2010 2:30 PM EDT on Post and CourierCOLA -- Duce Staley had been in a slow boil the past few months, and he finally erupted Tuesday. The West Columbia native who starred at South Carolina and in the NFL for a decade blew up today because he feels slighted by USC.A job that was once promised to Duce will go to Terry Cousin, another former Gamecock who spent time in the NFL.Staley seemed most upset that AD Eric Hyman didn't call or text him to inform him that Cousin would be hired for that job.Duce, speaking on his afternoon radio show on 107.5 "The Game" FM, specifically addressed Hyman, who might've been listening."Today I'm very frustrated with you," Staley said. "Even though you decided to go another route, at least I could've got a phone call. I might not have liked what you said to me ... but, as a man, I would've accepted it a little better. This is a slap to my face."Even though he wasn't hired for the job, Staley was still doing the job to some extent.I know he talked some players off the ledge when they were frustrated, even convincing some not to transfer or leave early for the NFL. He said Tuesday that he's been in touch with some high school coaches, to improve relationships there. Duce has the ear, too, of former players -- even prickly ones such as Sterling Sharpe."While you were home sleeping, Eric, I was out helping my university," Duce said. "I'm always out carrying the flag for my university."I've seen it firsthand on a number of occasions. Players of all ages look up to and respect Duce. He knows the game and he knows what it takes to be successful playing it.But the school basically could not risk hiring Staley. That left bad blood that's only soured."How can I be fully committed to a university that's not fully committed to me?" Staley said. Some history that will speak to why things didn't work out for Duce -- and what led to Tuesday's blowup:A little more than a year ago, Steve Spurrier promised Staley he'd join the football staff as a player consultant (he'd help with high school, current and former player relations). I felt confident enough that it would happen that I wrote a story about it. Others did, too, after Spurrier confirmed just before the Outback Bowl that Staley would soon be hired.Turns out, Spurrier spoke out of turn and the school didn't feel as good about hiring Staley as the Ball Coach did.Hyman, and perhaps rightfully so, didn't feel comfortable hiring Staley. Namely, there were some question marks about Staley's track record. There were, and are, some issues there.Additionally, (and this was more publicly known) the school said it couldn't hire Duce unless he completed his degree. Staley agreed to do so, but had a decent amount of credit hours remaining. He attended some night classes, and continued to even after Hyman told him the school couldn't immediately hire him.But a chasm began widening in the relationship between Staley and school, as it became clear USC wouldn't hire Staley. It got larger and larger until it all hit the fan with the internal news (yet to be released, as far as I know) that Cousin would be hired for the player liaison gig once promised to Duce. It's an unfortunate situation for both sides. USC really wanted to hire Staley, but its hands were tied in various ways. That left Duce to sort of twist in the wind after the news became public and Spurrier confirmed it. You can understand his frustration, especially since it's obvious that he does care about the school.Let's hope there's some sort of olive branch that can bring about peace between the sides so that Staley doesn't become just another disenchanted former Gamecock, as he claimed today that he would be."I understand why they're mad," Staley said of former USC players, especially those who've gone on to NFL success. "I understand why, when they go, they shut the door."

Well, he was OK with his son coming here ... hopefully that's a sign that he bears the university as a whole no ill will.
I think that bridge has been repaired.  What I don't know is if the degree was ever completed.  It's all probably moot, as I think Staley's future remains in the NFL, and has secured at least an interview for the HC job with the Eagles.

For the most part, I liked Hyman and thought he did a pretty good job of righting our athletic budget and putting us on a good financial path.  However, I do find the academic standards applied to Staley at the time a little ironic considering that Hyman's alma mater was providing at the time sham classes for athletic eligibility.

And in all likelihood, Hyman had no knowledge of that laughable situation at UNC, but I do appreciate the irony.

I had seen online somewhere after we hired Beamer to expect a "splashy" hire soon and that was right before the Eagles fired Pederson.

The recent hires have been great but not "splashy".  I didn't think about Duce at the time and I didn't really know who else the "splashy" hire might be.

Duce was just coming off his playing career back then and didn't have the coaching experience he has now.

It would be great if it happened and Duce and Dumani ended up having some classes together.  LOL

Duce has gotten so much good experience since then that we do not have much of a shot. I think he will be an NFL Head Coach sooner rather than later.

Which would be great for the Gamecock brand.
The team has been missing that inner fire for a while now.

He would be like military Executive Officer who would keep everyone squared away and fired up besides whatever his position coaching duties were.

The sports management degree program we have now didn't exist back then.  He could knock that out pretty easily.

D-U-U-U-CE !!!!

Don't get me wrong - I would love to have him. And he may very well have interest in coming here - he could watch Damani's last year.

But I think he would not take a college job unless there was a title - in other words, not just a position coach. He would make less money and lose the chance to be an NFL Head Coach.
Make him an associate head coach who coaches a position as well, pay him accordingly, and I bet he would come on the principle of giving Hyman the finger.

I'm down. But his position would be RBs and we already have a good one there in Des Kitchings.

His fallback would be WRs, and we just hired Justin Stepp there. For those who do not remember, Duce led the state in receiving as a WR at Airport High, then played WR in his first year at JUCO before being switched to RB.
He can coach running backs after our running backs coach goes to Auburn. Jk

Rocker's replacement might be Jimmy Lindsey. He's a Cheraw native, and coached with Clayton White at W. Kentucky.

From there, Lindsey traveled for stints at Gardner-Webb, Miami (Ohio), Tennessee-Martin, Chattanooga, Furman, and Georgia Southern. At Tennessee-Martin, Lindsey had staff carryover with Carolina offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield. Lindsey also completed NFL minority coaching internships with the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos, and San Diego Chargers.
The NFL coaching internships are a dang bonus.

Good get.
